"Journey to the West" 14 times, there is such a story: Tang monks xitian to learn the scriptures, but encountered 6 mountain thieves who cut the path: seeing joy, ears listening to anger, nose sniffing love, tongue tasting, opinion desire, body worry, known as the mountain lord who accumulated years, but wanted the ancestral king Sun Wukong to stay and buy money.

Sun Wukong is the lord of the "Heavenly Palace", the monkey temper comes up, that is still with them theory, and sure enough, he killed things!

When I was a child, watching the TV series "Journey to the West" played here, I only cared about watching the monkeys lively, and a laugh passed. Now it seems to have a lot of meaning:

The 6 thieves in Journey to the West refer to the 6 "eyes, ears, nose, tongue, mind, and body" in Buddhism. Sun Wukong decisively killed 6 mountain thieves, which means that he has six pure roots and can escape into the Buddha's Gate.

According to the Wei Zhi, buddhism was introduced to China as early as the Han Dynasty as a divine magic. Since then, it has gradually combined with traditional Chinese culture, and by the time of the Sui and Tang dynasties, it has produced systems such as Zen Buddhism, Tiantai, Weizhi, and Huayan, which have had a profound impact on Chinese history and culture.

The mythological story in Journey to the West is mainly shaped by the Buddhist theory of Zen Buddhism.

Sun Wukong has 108,000 miles in a single rib, a total of 18,000 miles on the path of the Western Heavens, and even the Monkey King has 84,000 monkey hairs, all quoted from the "Treatise on the Sayings" of the Six Ancestors' "Tantra", which has a total of 108,000... Born of eighty-four thousand wisdom (Prajnaparamita).

Today, Zen Buddhism has become a relatively fashionable discipline, and its wisdom is highly sought after in European and American countries. It is said that foreigners were inspired by the theories of Zen Buddhism and began to apply it to the psychotherapy of "urban diseases". (Persuading people to be kind is conducive to regulating the mind)

"Journey to the West" integrates the culture of three religions and nine streams, which can be described as all-encompassing. It not only expounds the true meaning of many Buddhism and Taoism, but also transmits a large amount of knowledge of Chinese sinology.

If you "knead" it and taste it carefully, you will find that the knowledge of traditional Chinese studies in it is simply too rich. In "Journey to the West", it can be said that it is:

The opening chapter begins with "Pangu Breaking Hongmeng" to explain Er, "Huiyuan" to discuss time, and "five shapes" to discuss space... When all things were not born, the "three emperors ruled the world", and even the nameless and nameless monkeys that jumped out of the stones knew the way of government that "people have no one, and they don't know what they can do". (From the Analects)

So how was the book "Journey to the West" created?

In 627, at the age of 25, the mage Xuanzang began a long journey to Tianzhu (India). (He had asked the Tang court to go to the West to seek the Fa, but was not allowed.) Because of the famine that year, the imperial court was afraid of starving too many people, so it opened the border and allowed the people to survive on their own. )

Xuanzang set out from Chang'an, passed through the central Asian countries, then to Afghanistan, through Pakistan, and endured all kinds of difficulties and dangers, and finally arrived at the city of Shecheng, the king of Magadha, India.

Over the next 5 years, he became famous by studying classic Buddhist scriptures such as the Mahayana Sutra and the Theory of The Decision of Wisdom at Nalanda Monastery.

At many large-scale Buddhist debates, Xuanzang successively defeated the masters of "Shunshi" and "Hinayana Theory" and won wide praise. King Jieri held an unshaked assembly for him in Qunu City, and Xuanzang personally preached Mahayana teachings, and his reputation reached its peak.

In 645, Master Xuanzang returned to Chang'an. He brought back 150 Buddha relics, 7 Buddha statues, and 657 Buddhist scriptures, which caused a sensation in the entire Tang Dynasty Buddhist community. Later, based on Master Xuanzang's dictated observations of his journey to the west, the disciple debated and compiled the 12 volumes of the Records of the Western Regions of the Great Tang Dynasty. The book focuses on the history, geography and traffic conditions of the 138 countries along the way, with little storyline.

A few years later, Hui Li, a disciple of Master Xuanzang, wrote the Biography of Master Sanzang of the Great Ci'en Monastery of the Great Tang Dynasty. In order to create the powerful image of Xuanzang, many myths and stories have been artificially added. Since then, the mythical story of Xuanzang (Tang monks) taking the scriptures has begun to spread widely in the folk.

Hundreds of years later, the Song Dynasty had a rendition of the "Tang Sanzang Sutra Poetry", "Tang Sanzang", "Peach Society", etc., and Wu Changling of the Yuan Dynasty created the miscellaneous dramas "Tang Sanzang Western Heavenly Scripture", "Erlang Shensuo Qi Tiandasheng" and so on.

At the end of the Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, Wu Cheng'en completed the classic masterpiece "Journey to the West" after painstaking creation and processing based on these folklore and scripts.

"Journey to the West" is originally a series of Buddhist stories, because the Buddha's Taoism is balanced, so Wu Cheng'en mixed a lot of Taoist content when writing, so "Journey to the West" is also called "The Book of the Immortal Buddha".

After reading "Journey to the West", many readers will have more or less questions, the most representative of which is: Tang Monk as a master behaves pedantic and incompetent, while the apprentice Sun Wukong has great supernatural powers, so why should Sun Wukong be loyal to Tang Monk?

This question, which seems to be small but large, embodies the profundity of Chinese Confucianism.

The master-apprentice relationship between Tang Monk and Sun Wukong stems from the true story of the Confucian sage Confucius and his disciple Zilu. According to historical records, Zilu once misunderstood Confucius and thus had the intention of murdering his teacher.

Sun Wukong and Zilu have a similar mental journey, and have a process of disobedience to rebellion (hostility) to master, and finally to satisfaction and submission.

This is precisely the ethical requirement of Confucianism to "respect the teacher and the Tao", and the storyline between Tang Monk and Sun Wukong in "Journey to the West" vividly reflects this deep-rooted cultural tradition.

Carefully taste the "Journey to the West", you can read the "Three Character Classic", "Hundred Family Names", "Thousand Character Text" and other Confucian enlightenment books, you can also appreciate the Gongshang Jiaoyu of the Sheng Gong Gong Drum, and even the medical method can find many clues.

Mr. Lu Xun tasted "Journey to the West": "Gods and demons all have human feelings, and their charm is also sophisticated. ”

A "Journey to the West" not only tells the story of a master and apprentice 4 people taking the scriptures from the West, it is more like a book of life revelations. What do you think about that?
