China News Network reporter Shen Ran

"My cataracts are getting worse and worse, and my eyes can't see clearly." Sun Ningsheng, who has turned 71 this year, said apologetically on the phone. The world is becoming more and more blurred in the eyes of the retired old teacher, but he has brought the light of knowledge and a clear future to more and more children in the mountains. From 2011 to 2022, in eleven years, from the teacher of the famous high school in the province to the librarian of the mountain primary school, Sun Ningsheng selflessly dedicated the second spring of his life to the children in the mountains.

In 1982, after graduating from Nanjing Normal University, Sun Ningsheng entered the Affiliated Middle School of Nanjing Normal University (hereinafter referred to as the South Normal University Affiliated Middle School) to teach.

In 2007, the Central Committee of the China Democratic League proposed the "Candlelight Action" to help strengthen the construction of rural teachers, promote the balanced development of compulsory education in urban and rural areas in China and the fairness of urban and rural education, and Sun Ningsheng, who was born in rural areas, actively participated in it.

In 2010, Sun Ningsheng reported his intention to volunteer to the leaders of the Nanjing Municipal Committee of the China Democratic League after retirement, and received positive support.

On January 13, 2011, three days after his official retirement, Sun Ningsheng, who was 60 years old, came to Qujing City, Yunnan Province, after more than 40 hours of boat and car labor, and on January 17, he went to Ciying Middle School in Ciying Town, Qilin District, 26 kilometers from the city, to begin his 11-year volunteer teaching career.

On December 17, 2021, the democratic parties, the Federation of Industry and Commerce, and non-party personages held a commendation meeting for their contributions to building a moderately prosperous society in an all-round way in Beijing, and 100 advanced collectives, 96 advanced individuals, 50 outstanding achievements in suggestions and suggestions, and 50 outstanding achievements in social service were commended, and Sun Ningsheng was commended as an advanced individual.

Create a world of books in the mountains

"On the first day I arrived at Ciying Middle School, I made a promise to the principal that in addition to volunteering to teach the children and support poor students, I would also raise a batch of books and magazines for the school and build a library." Sun Ningsheng recalled, "Ciying Middle School is in the deep mountains of Wumeng Mountain, the conditions for running the school are the worst, and there are deficiencies in all aspects, but what I am most concerned about is that the children do not have a place to read, which is the most urgent need." ”

Without a house to do a library, Sun Ningsheng took out his housing provident fund of more than 30,000 yuan (RMB, the same below) to build a steel structure movable board library of more than 50 square meters; the school lacked books, Sun Ningsheng rushed back to Nanjing during the winter vacation, raised funds everywhere, and raised more than 6,000 books and more than 2,000 magazines before the Chinese New Year's Eve in 2011.

On March 21, 2011, the simple library called "Hope Bookstore" was opened to more than 1,800 teachers and students at Ciying Middle School.

Eleven years later, there are now more than 30,000 books and magazines in this library. At noon on every class day, it is the most lively time here, and students of all grades are clustered in front of the bookshelves, searching, exploring, concentrating and silent, and communicating enthusiastically...

At this time, it is also the happiest moment of Sun Ningsheng's daily life, he always through reading glasses, carefully register the books borrowed for students on the computer, and introduce the latest good books to students, "Most of the tens of thousands of books in the library are logged into the library by me one by one." Especially when the children's favorite books arrive, even if it is late, I must put them into the library in time so that everyone can read them early. ”

This simple library seems to have truly become a "boat of hope", under the "swaying" of the white-haired guide, carrying the teachers and students here in the arduous sea of learning.

Light up the path of poor children to school

Since coming to Ciying Middle School, every semester at the beginning of the semester, Sun Ningsheng has to visit poor students at home, apply for and raise financial aid funds for them, and ensure that students can continue to study as long as they are willing to study.

In the past 11 years, Sun Ningsheng has traveled to more than 600 student families, walked as far as more than ten miles of mountain road, and visited families along the road; contacted and organized more than 400 caring people and some social groups, funded 320 poor students and orphans, and donated more than 300,000 yuan in total.

Among them, the one that made Sun Ningsheng most angry was a girl named Li Rong (pseudonym). Because of her father's illness, Li Rong had to drop out of school and go home to farm.

"When the girl cried and said to me, 'My mother can't plant so much land alone, and I can't afford the living expenses of my brother and me...', I couldn't think of any solution to the problem, and I could only watch my child leave school and enter the society early." Every time Sun Ningsheng thought of Li Rong, he felt that his heart was heavy.

Fortunately, over the years, with more and more caring people, the way and channel of aiding students have become more and more smooth, and Sun Ningsheng has more confidence to dissuade poor students from dropping out of school. He gave himself the task of doing everything in his power to help all orphans finish junior high school. Some poor rural children with good learning potential and correct learning attitude should be encouraged to study diligently, enter universities for further study, and contribute to changing the face of their families and hometowns.

Sun Ningsheng made himself a platform, "Behind me, there are 1,200 members of the Nanjing Democratic League, thousands of teachers and students of the South Division High School, who have given me great support in all aspects." ”

In Sun Ningsheng's paired hand-in-hand study "account book", next to the name of each poor student, the name of the sponsor, the money for the fund, and the academic situation of the sponsor are recorded in detail.

Today, some of these sponsored students have graduated from college, some have become primary and secondary school teachers and nurses in health centers, and some have become the backbone of enterprises.

"Compared with sunlight and light, candlelight has limited brightness, but candlelight can illuminate the way forward in the darkest places." At the end of the interview, Sun Ningsheng told the China News Network reporter, "I am willing to do such a candlelight, not only willing in the past, willing now, but also willing in the future." I firmly believe that even if the brightness is small, as long as there is more candlelight, it can illuminate a large area. (End)
