At 2:30 a.m., Master Wang, a driver at Dongguan Didi, received his last order before receiving the car - from Huawei's "European Town" to Shenzhen. There is no traffic jam at night, and you can get to Nanshan in Shenzhen in 50 minutes.
"There are a lot of people calling for a car, and there are often many people who take a taxi at 11 o'clock and 12 o'clock at night." Since 2018, Master Wang has traveled between Dongguan and Shenzhen almost every day, and the license plate starting with "Yue B" allows him to travel between Dongguan Songshan Lake and Shenzhen without restriction during the morning and evening rush hours.
Master Wang "went to work" at Songshan Lake at almost the same time as Huawei employees.
On July 2, 2018, Huawei's Songshan Lake project, which plans to invest 10 billion yuan, welcomed the first batch of employees - some employees of Huawei's R&D department went to work in Huawei Stream Backpo Village in Songshan Lake on the first day. A few years earlier, Huawei, which started in Shenzhen, had made a "bold" decision: to move its terminal business to Songshan Lake, a large natural reservoir in Dalang Town, Dongguan.
Huawei's Stream Back Slope Village project was built around Songshan Lake in 2015, and Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei personally participated in the planning of this European town. The project covers a total area of about 1,900 acres, with a total construction area of about 1.26 million square meters, which is about the size of 182 standard football fields. The park is divided into 12 areas, modeled on a classic European city, which can be "visited" in One Day in Paris, Burgundy, Heidelberg and so on.
In fact, as early as May 2002, Songshan Lake has officially made a public appearance to attract investment. However, in the process of industrial development of Songshan Lake, Huawei's entry has truly pushed Songshan Lake to the forefront of global economic development and completely changed people's inherent perception of Dongguan.
Since 2005, Songshan Lake has attracted the attention of Huawei by virtue of its advantages in transportation location, industrial support, and ecological environment, which began to lay out Songshan Lake that year, and Huawei's subsidiary Juxin Technology Co., Ltd. was established in Songshan Lake. In 2006, Huawei started construction of the Songshan Lake South plant project. In August 2013, Huawei announced that Huawei Terminal Company would relocate to Songshan Lake.
Nowadays, Songshan Lake has long been more than one Huawei terminal, Huabei Electronics, Shengyi Technology, Pulian Technology, Goertek And a number of other leading enterprises, while introducing Biological Enterprises such as East Sunshine, Red Coral Pharmaceutical, Fei peng Biological, Zhongsheng Pharmaceutical, etc., the added value of advanced manufacturing and high-tech manufacturing industry added value, accounting for more than 90% of the industrial added value in the park.
Although he is not a Huawei employee, Master Wang also clearly feels that his livelihood is inseparable from the big companies located in Songshan Lake: "We are still very grateful to a large company like Huawei, which has brought many big orders such as business trips, airports and trips to and from Shenzhen for our Didi drivers." The surrounding environment and economy are driven by them. ”

Each other is a brand name
May is perhaps the most colourful season in European towns, with pink-leaved sheepshoe beetles, blooming red cuckoos, black swans in the water, sunlight coming in obliquely through off-white round arches, and patchwork of vegetation with tender green and new green.
If it were not for the occasional red Huawei logo, on the 10-minute shuttle train, it is difficult to believe that you are in southern China. On the shores of Songshan Lake, where the lake is full of trees, Huawei engineers and makers carrying backpacks are in a hurry, running at the forefront of global innovation, adding more color to the city's innovation and entrepreneurship ecology.
Master Wang does not know what buildings and styles are in Huawei's European towns, but he feels that after Huawei came, several cement roads became asphalt roads, and the greenery on both sides of the street got better and better every year. He remembers that after Huawei came to Songshan Lake, he could get more than 15,000 yuan of income every month just by running Didi.

Today, Huawei and Songshan Lake have achieved each other's achievements and become each other's business cards. Huawei's economic role in Songshan Lake and even the whole of Dongguan is self-evident, and it is really reflected in the numbers.
Huawei's terminal projects had a total industrial output value of 80.8 billion yuan in 2015, accounting for 51% of the total Songshan Lake, and the tax revenue was 2.4 billion yuan, accounting for 30% of Songshan Lake. In 2016, Huawei's industrial enterprises became the first 100 billion enterprise in Songshan Lake. At the 2017 work summary conference held in Dongguan, it was revealed that Huawei won the three championships of total exports, main business income and tax payment in one fell swoop, becoming the "triple crown".
In Shenzhen, where Huawei started, land costs are rising day by day. According to statistics, Shenzhen covers an area of 2,000 square kilometers, less than 1/3 of Shanghai, less than 1/4 of Suzhou, less than 1/7 of Chengdu, and less than 1/8 of Beijing. Dongguan not only has more available land resources, but also is located between Guangzhou and Shenzhen, starting from the central urban area, it takes only an hour to drive from Shenzhen Bao'an Airport, and it takes only one and a half hours to Guangzhou Baiyun Airport in the northwest. For four consecutive years, Dongguan has ranked among the new first-tier cities in China, with many factories, known as "Dongguan traffic jam, global shortage of goods".
For Huawei, industrial spillover is in line with the law of development. Ren Zhengfei once said: "The most important thing in industrial modernization is to have land in exchange for industrial growth." Now that the land is getting less and less and more expensive, the possible space for industrial growth will be smaller and smaller. ”
Professor Li Zexiang, the mentor of DJI founder Wang Tao, also expressed a similar idea when he founded the Songshan Lake Robot Industry Base: "After the projects represented by DJI have risen, the cost of land and rent in Shenzhen has become higher and higher, and we hope to find some wider space, so we will go to Guangming, Pingshan, and even Zhuhai around Shenzhen to investigate, a relatively fortuitous opportunity to come here." ”
In 2014, with the support of the Dongguan Municipal Government and the Songshan Lake Management Committee, Li Zexiang established the Songshan Lake Robot Industry Base together with Gao Bingqiang, former Dean of the School of Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Gan Jie, Vice Dean of Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business.
Innovation around the lake
Huawei's arrival has not only changed the development process of Songshan Lake's IT industry to a certain extent, but also changed the layout of many ecological partners.
At the same time that Huawei opened the Songshan Lake office, Yibao Software also held a housewarming celebration at the Songshan Lake base. EBao is a supplier to Huawei, and Huawei's business accounts for more than 90% of EBao's total business. Yibao CEO Huang Jingchun said that Dongguan accompanied the arrival of industry aircraft carriers such as Huawei, which brought a lot of imagination space to the entire software industry, and Yibao seized this opportunity to establish it.
EBao is only one of the representative enterprises driven by Huawei. When Huawei entered Songshan Lake, it attracted a number of upstream and downstream enterprises in the electronic information industry, such as component suppliers such as Huabei Technology, Changying Precision, Lens Technology, and Goertek, as well as software suppliers such as Chinasoft International, iSoftStone, and Huawei Tomorrow.
Thousands of software development talents are highly concentrated, creating a good atmosphere for mutual learning and exchange between industries, and it is also regarded as the "Little Nanshan District" that is expected to become the future Songshan Lake. Nowadays, not only the information industry driven by Huawei, but also the robot industry, biopharmaceuticals and other enterprises have turned their attention to this "high-tech zone".
"Songshan Lake is adjacent to several towns and can be easily reached by highway. Several towns have their own characteristics, such as Liaobu has the largest second-hand car city, next to Dalang is the largest wool weaving city, Fenggang is the hardware city, camphor wood is the electronic city, etc., such suppliers have agglomeration, procurement is very convenient. In terms of electronics, sending things from Huaqiang North in Shenzhen arrived in one day, especially suitable for hardware entrepreneurship. Some hardware entrepreneurs once mentioned the advantages of Songshan Lake.
Some investors even feel that it is not comprehensive to invest in robots now and not to go to Songshan Lake to see. Since the establishment of dongguan robot industry base in 2014, more than 60 enterprises have been incubated here, with a survival rate of 80%, including Li Qun Automation, Gugao, Homan Technology, Walnut Intelligent Robot, etc.

In September 2010, Songshan Lake was upgraded to a national high-tech industrial development zone with the approval of the State Council. With the lake as the center, part of the edge of Dalingshan, Liaobu and Dalang near Songshan Lake is divided, and the lake area is recombined to form a new development zone.
"Now there are several roads, the morning and evening rush hours and Shenzhen are not much different, especially congested." Master Wang feels that Songshan Lake is a world away from ten years ago, "Now there are more people, and the house price is also expensive."
Songshan Lake is becoming a small city driven by science and technology.
At present, Songshan Lake has gathered 30 new R&D institutions, 6 universities, and the total number of national high-tech enterprises has exceeded 500, forming a diversified innovation pattern. According to statistics, the total permanent population of Songshan Lake has risen from 37658 to 120765, an increase of 83107 people in ten years, with a growth rate of about 220.69%, which is one of the fastest growing areas in Dongguan.
According to the "2020 Guangzhou Transportation Development Annual Report" released by the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Planning and Natural Resources, the number of cross-city trips between Shenzhen and Guanguan reached 1.208 million per day, becoming a twin city with an average daily commuter of more than one million. The report provides a statistic on cross-city travel data between major cities in the Greater Bay Area.
However, with more and more high-tech enterprises settling in, the highest house price in songshan lake area has also crossed the threshold of 50,000. "House prices have risen too much." Master Wang said, "But the money is also earned more." His wife also opened a noodle shop near Lake Matsuyama. For him who has been away from his hometown for 20 years, Songshan Lake has long been his second hometown.
In Dongguan, there are Didi drivers like Master Wang, there are well-paid scientific and technological talents, and there are assembly line workers who have to punch 13,000 holes one day, and everyone is looking for a better future.
