Zhang Yuguang was the forerunner of early Western painting, Tushan Bay has his figure, the painting was exhibited and awarded at the Nanyang Persuasion Association, and very little historical material has survived, and posterity knows almost nothing about him.

Zhang Yuguang: (1885~1968) Character Crane Cangtou, nicknamed Ye Ou Zhai Lord. People from Shaoxing, Zhejiang. Famous artist and painter. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Zhang Yuguang was hired as a painter at the Shanghai Academy of Chinese Painting. He was a member of the China Artists Association, a director of the Shanghai Branch of the American Artists Association, and a librarian of the Shanghai Municipal Museum of Culture and History. His works include "Huangshan Yunhai Map" and "Peacock Diagram" (In Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy). He published two volumes of "Nie Guang Painting Collection" (1935).

He was born in Shanyin County, Shaoxing Province, Zhejiang Province, lost his father at the age of six, returned to Shaoxing with his mother, and went to Yichang, Hubei Province, to live with relatives. When he was ten years old, he entered a private school to worship the famous Yichang celebrity Wang Budian (trumpet bath student) as a teacher, reading and learning painting, arithmetic, and English. After living in Hangzhou for three years, he went to Shanghai at the age of 19 to paint with friends.

In 1912, Liu Haisu and Zhang Yuguang founded the Shanghai Academy of Graphic Arts, later called the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, and invited Zhang Yuguang to be the principal, at the age of 27 and Liu 17. Zhang Yuguang mainly went to teach because he had no time, and the school affairs were done by Liu Haisu, Ding Hu, Wang Jiyuan and so on. After that, he gradually separated from the Shanghai Art College and Liu Haisu served as the principal of the school.

Painting art work is a necessity for paint brushes. These were particularly scarce during the First World War, and it was inconvenient to rely on foreign imports. In 1918, Zhang Yuguang and a few friends set up the "Liuhe Company" to make square watercolors and paintbrushes, but they stopped running it for more than a year because they were not good at management.

In 1919, some other friends such as Xie Jintang, Xu Baochen, Hong Jitang, etc. founded the Mali Craft Factory, which was still satisfactory in operation, and Zhang Yuguang also participated, so as to promote the promotion of domestic products in the art world. Therefore, he used the remaining pigment raw materials from the time of Liuhe Company into the shares. In the following decades, the horse head paint and cultural and art supplies of the Mali Factory were well-known at home and abroad.

In order to enrich his knowledge and skills of Western painting, he studied pencil painting, watercolor painting, oil painting and anatomy for three years in Shanghai under the french painter Lu Taofu. During this time, he traveled to various parts of Japan to observe their art. In 1922, he studied Western painting with the Russian painter Putgorski. Because Western painting has its scientific foundation, it is helpful for later engaging in Chinese painting.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Zhang Yuguang preserved his works and awards at the National Museum of France, the Berlin Academy of Arts in Germany, the Golden Gate Museum in the United States, and the Panama World Exposition.

Shanghai satirical paintings and cartoons were first seen in Japanese newspapers. Zhang Yuguang's comic strip was started in the "News Daily" at the end of guangxu, which is an anti-Qing newspaper. The pen name he uses is the word "Ye".

During the Xuantong period, the newspapers that propagated the revolution were "Minhu", "Minhu", and "Minli", which were compiled by Youren, Shao Lizi, Dai Jitao, and Yang Qianli, and invited him to serve as a comic reporter.

From 1926 to 1933, Zhang Yuguang was invited to the Star Film Company as the art director, and together with Hong Shen and Ouyang Yuqian, he shot many films such as "White Cloud Tower". The art technique of interior and exterior, that is, the connection between real scene and set, is very effective. His achievements in this regard can be regarded as a pioneer in Shanghai.

Shanghai's stage sets first appeared at the Lyceum Theatre on Yuanmingyuan Road, specializing in foreign plays such as Shakespeare. Zhang Yuguang also often went to watch through his friends, attracted by their stage sets.

At the end of the Guangxu Dynasty, the gentleman Yao Boxin opened a "new stage" in the sixteen shops, and at the beginning asked the Japanese to draw sets, but they did not understand the Characteristics of China, and some of the sets were not really well matched. Zhang Yuguang began to paint the first set as a study, and after the opening, the audience applauded and praised, some said, "Who painted this, you can't let him go!" ”

Mei Lanfang also mentioned the new stage and Zhang Yuguang's name in "Forty Years of Stage Life", so there were many people who visited Ye Ouzhai at that time, and he was one of the respected old people in the national painting circle of the art world.

During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, he went to the rear area, went through hardships and never stopped painting, and held painting exhibitions in Chongqing, Chengdu, Kunming and other places.

During the catastrophe of the "Cultural Revolution," zhang Yuguang's paintings were engraved with more than a hundred large and small seals, as well as all kinds of seals applied to the vertical shafts of the large hall and as small as the fan surfaces; as well as the fine works of calligraphy and paintings of famous artists of the past dynasties, european and American Western paintings postcards, Chinese paintings that he himself framed for the exhibition, and hundreds of Western paintings of sketching chrysanthemum varieties were all copied away. They even said, "What else is this old man drawing?" and demolished the painting table.

After several years of the "Cultural Revolution", Zhang Yuguang suffered a devastating blow to his body and mind, and his painting career was completely destroyed, he was mentally sluggish and faltering, and finally fell ill in March 1968. He died on April 9 of the same year at the age of eighty-four. At that time, it was the peak of the "Cultural Revolution", and only children and a few close relatives bid farewell at the Crematorium of Haihui Temple.
