Kuo explains that Apple originally intended to provide temperature measurement in the Apple Watch Series 7 model, but before the device entered the Engineering Verification Test (EVT) phase last year, the company's temperature algorithm did not meet the requirements, so the plan was shelved.
He believes that the Apple Watch Series 8, which will launch this fall, will provide temperature monitoring capabilities, but only if "the algorithm can meet Apple's high requirements before mass production."
The problem Apple is said to have encountered with body temperature measurements related to the rapid change in skin temperature according to the environment, and since smartwatches cannot monitor core body temperature using hardware, the function depends heavily on algorithms that produce accurate results.
As a competitor, Samsung has encountered similar challenges in terms of body temperature measurement, and also due to algorithmic limitations, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 may not be equipped with a temperature monitoring function.
Both Kuo and Bloomberg's Mark Gullman have previously discussed how the 2022 Apple Watch might offer a temperature monitoring feature, but there have been far fewer rumors related to the feature in recent times. Analysts' comments today seem to raise further doubts about whether the feature will actually be unveiled at the Apple Watch Series 8 later this year.
