The Hong Kong Museum of Art's collection of Chinese artifacts is the richest and oldest in the Museum, including over 4,500 items of Chinese ceramics, Guangdong ceramics, Chinese export ceramics, Southeast Asian ceramics, clothing and embroidery and other arts and crafts, including bronze, jade carving, lacquerware, enamelware, glass, bamboo carving, woodcuts, ivory, rhino horns, snuff bottles and furniture. Whether it is for decoration, daily use, sacrifice, or tombs, they are all historical and cultural properties that have been preserved for thousands of years. Each collection combines a high degree of creativity and exquisite technology to provide important physical materials for the study of ancient Chinese social culture.
Hong Kong is located at the gateway to the south of China and plays a major role in the transportation between China and foreign countries, so Lingnan cultural relics related to Hong Kong and Guangdong are also one of the key collections of the Museum. Over the years, the Hong Kong Museum of Art has been actively procuring various types of cultural relics and promoting Chinese culture through exhibitions, during which it has been enthusiastically supported by people from all walks of life and has donated treasures to the museum, resulting in an increasingly rich collection of cultural relics. For example, in 1985, a batch of bamboo carvings donated by Dr. Ye Yi reflected the face closely related to the lives of literati. The Shiwan pottery donated by Mr. Hu Jinchao and Mrs. Guo An in 1986 and 1987 respectively fully demonstrates the local characteristics of this famous kiln in Guangdong. In addition, people and institutions from all walks of life have also generously donated precious cultural relics, reflecting the public's enthusiasm for the preservation of cultural relics and supporting the Hong Kong Museum of Art.
