In 2021, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, Shanghai Ballet launched the original ballet "Pagoda Mountain". The play is co-produced by Shanghai Ballet and Red Dragonfly Group. "Pagoda Mountain" focuses on the sacred site of Yan'an, Baota Mountain, with the war as the background, telling the story of Minghua, Meng'an and other patriotic literary and artistic youths from all over the world rushing to Yan'an. There, they received education from the Party, searched for faith in their hearts, and eventually grew from literary and artistic youth to revolutionary heroes. The male protagonist of the play, Minghua, a student who returned from Europe, is played by Wu Husheng, chief star of Shanghai Ballet and a national first-class actor; the female protagonist, Meng'an, a progressive young man from Shanghai, is played by Qi Bingxue, the youngest major actor of Shanghai Ballet and a national first-class actor.
"Pagoda Mountain" uses the elegant and delicate body language of Haipai ballet and rich dramatic tension, the musical melody full of the spirit of the times and modern concepts, and the stage design based on the stripping and simple abstract historical sketches, which is beautiful and artistically tells the moving story of the past under the Pagoda Mountain, traces the heroic feelings of the centenary communists who have not forgotten their original mission, and encourages future generations to compose new brilliant ideals and beliefs for the new era.
The play will be the world premiere at the Shanghai Grand Theatre on May 7 and 8, 2021 as an exhibition season celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the 37th Shanghai Spring International Music Festival.
