Synopsis
"Will on the Tiptoe: Performance Practice and Contemporary Discourse in Ballet (1964-2014)" makes good use of the holistic perspective of cultural anthropology and the perspective of cultural criticism, focusing on the significance of the classic modern ballet "Red Detachment of Women" in contemporary China, exploring the complex relationship between discourse, performance and practice in different scenes. This perspective breaks through the orientalist attachment of modernist anthropology to exotic/frontier/folk dances, and transfers theoretical criticism to the study of mainstream classical works and art groups from the perspective of the relationship between knowledge and power.
In addition, for the study of dance, this book opens up the holistic relationship between dance form, grammar and meaning and context, discourse, and social practice. This book also records in detail the attitudes and understandings of the original and contemporary actors of the dance drama on the roles, performance environments and adaptation processes of the dance drama, and in the ethnographic process of participatory experience, it three-dimensionally describes the various possibilities of the body technology and phenomenological body shaped by tradition, history and discourse in the practice of different generations of actors, and thinks about the relationship between the social mechanism and agency of the complex generation of the meaning of the dance drama around this possibility.
