The first edition of the Chinese Hunan Cuisine Dictionary, published in 2008, is the first illustrated dictionary of cuisine in China, and won the "Original Book Award" issued by the State Press and Publication Administration that year, followed by the "Special Award" issued by the World Food Book Jury.

After more than ten years of investigation, research and preparation, the editorial board of the Chinese Hunan Cuisine Dictionary launched the second edition of the compilation at the end of 2018, and organized and mobilized more than 200 outstanding experts in the fields of literature and history, archaeology, folklore, science and technology, catering and photography to participate together. After painstaking drafting, editing, typesetting, and strict proofreading and review by China Light Industry Publishing House, this voluminous basic cultural project was finally completed.

The second edition of the "Chinese Hunan Cuisine Dictionary" greatly expands the content of pictures and texts, the whole book is more than 2.4 million words, more than 4,000 entries, divided into four volumes, respectively, introducing the origin of Hunan cuisine, archaeology, historical books, food folklore, palm history, old brands, ingredients, products, characters, cooking techniques, etc., and promoting more than 2,000 classic Hunan cuisine, local cuisine, new Hunan cuisine, Vegetarian dishes, prepared dishes, ethnic minority dishes and noodle snacks.

Peng Zicheng, editor-in-chief of the book, said: "Although the Chinese Hunan Cuisine Dictionary is named 'Hunan Cuisine', it is not limited to the dishes themselves, but builds the structure of the whole book from the perspective of Huxiang food culture.
