Zhang Liang Qin Xuesong

Keywords: Yuguo; cemetery; hierarchy; social class structure; early Spring and Autumn Period

【Abstract】On the basis of systematically sorting out the data of the cemetery in the early Spring and Autumn Period, combined with statistical methods, the hierarchy of the cemetery is analyzed. The results show that the tomb of the State of Yu contains two major levels of bronze ceremonial tombs and non-ceremonial tombs, the former can be further divided into high, medium and low levels, the latter can be divided into high and low two levels, and the grade difference between each level is obvious. This characteristic corresponds to the social structure of the Western Zhou Dynasty divided by blood relatives, indicating that the early Spring and Autumn Period of the Yu state society roughly inherited the patriarchal structure of the Western Zhou society. However, a small number of non-ceremonial tombs are of a similar rank to bronze ceremonial tombs, reflecting that some unstable factors may have been implied in the social structure of the Yu kingdom at that time.
