Binyang Zhongdong Lotus Algae Well Restoration Painting

Emerald green lotus canopy, pink petals, ten flying bodies, more than ten kinds of mineral pigments, more than 1500 years ago... Recently, the staff of longmen grotto research institute used a number of scientific and technological means to complete a restored painting of the lotus algae well in Binyang Zhongdong, giving us the opportunity to brush away the dust of history and see the fanghua of the algae well.

Full of three-dimensional sense, reproducing the gorgeous "face" of the lotus algae well in Binyang Zhongdong

Following Gao Junping, director of the Information Material Center of the Longmen Grotto research institute, through a series of protection doors into the cultural relics warehouse, the reporter saw this painting with a length and width of about 3 meters. The emerald green lotus canopy in the center of the picture surrounds two circles of pink lotus petals, around the lotus flower, eight bodies wearing hair buns, slender bodies of Qile Feitian are folding their knees and flying, making postures such as playing kites, blowing pipes, stroking Ruan, and hitting chimes, and the streamers behind them are gently dragging, and there are two barefoot cloaks at the bottom of the picture; the outermost layer is a decorative pattern composed of lotus flowers and clouds, which shows static movement, reflecting the cheerful scene of flying clouds and clouds, the picture is three-dimensional, and there is a "naked eye 3D" effect.

Why was the Lotus Algae Well in Binyang Zhongdong chosen as the object of restoration? Gao Junping said that unlike many caves in the Longmen Grottoes that have been continuously chiseled for many generations, the construction project of Binyang Zhongdong is a very representative of the Hanhua new caves of the Northern Wei Dynasty in the Longmen Grottoes, which has high historical, cultural and artistic value and shows the extraordinary royal momentum of the Northern Wei Dynasty. However, the lotus flower has been "blooming" for more than 1500 years, and its body has left many "traces of time", and today we are in binyang Zhongdong, looking up at the algae well is difficult to see its exquisite "face". In order to more intuitively show the public its palatial and dazzling appearance, the researchers created this work.

Full of scientific and technological content, restore the decoration process of the Northern Wei Dynasty

"This restored painting is not only a work of art, but also a 'technological product.'" Gao Junping introduced that in order to restore the original color of lotus algae well, researchers have experienced a long creative process by using a variety of technical means.

In January last year, researchers first collected high-precision three-dimensional data from the lotus algae well at the top of binyangzhong cave, and sketched the outline on its orthophoto map to draw a line drawing basemap. In addition, Binyang Zhongdong has long been affected by various disease factors such as water leakage, weathering, and microorganisms, and the overall peeling of algae well painting is serious, and the naked eye can only see red, black and a little green residue, and almost no other colors can be seen, and the use of portable microscopes in field investigation and research can also observe yellow, blue, pink, white, etc. In order to study the regularity of color as a whole, the researchers used X-ray fluorescence meter, laser Raman spectrometer and other scientific and technological means to sample and detect and analyze the shedding pigment residue at different locations of the algae well, and clarified the composition of the pigment. The researchers reconstructed the coloring process when the Binyang Zhongdong was built, using pigments mixed with minerals and animal glue, and coloring them layer by layer.

"That's why it's obviously created on flat rice paper, but it has such a realistic three-dimensional effect." Gao Junping said that the rigorous scientific process has achieved a "sense of reality" in the work.

How will this restored painting be made available to the public? Shi Jiazhen, president of the Longmen Grottoes Research Institute, said that as part of the digital protection of the Longmen Grottoes, the lotus algae wells in Binyang Zhongdong may be exhibited in the Longmen Grottoes Digital Museum after the restoration of the paintings. In addition, the staff will also try to integrate virtual reality technology, so that visitors can not only watch the colorful works of the restored paintings in the scenic spot, but also use mobile phones and computers to "cloud viewing" on the Internet.

Shi Jiazhen said that after the debut of the work, it caused heated discussion among the staff and provided many good ideas for the development of cultural and creative products, "Everyone brainstormed to develop suitable products, so that historical art can enter thousands of households."
