Sitting, surgery, business trips, meetings, taking graduate students... In addition to all kinds of busyness, carefully choosing words and sentences, and repeatedly revising the proposals to be brought to the two sessions of the National People's Congress this year are the top priority of Hua Yawei, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and vice president of the Henan Provincial Cancer Hospital.

Since graduating from China Medical University in 1985 and working in Henan Provincial Cancer Hospital, Hua Yawei has been practicing medicine for nearly 40 years. Over the years, he has been thinking about and working hard to promote the "three early" projects of how to promote early tumor screening, early diagnosis and early treatment.

As a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, he previously put forward opinions and suggestions from seven aspects, such as taking the improvement of the comprehensive cancer prevention and treatment system as the key content of Healthy China, carrying out early prevention and early treatment in high-risk groups, and improving the cancer diagnosis and treatment system, and this suggestion was incorporated into the 15 special actions of Healthy China Action. At the two sessions of the National People's Congress this year, he continued to advocate for the fight against cancer, and one of the proposals he prepared was to accelerate the establishment of an early cancer screening system on the mainland.

More than 80% of patients with common tumors are in the middle and advanced stages when they present

After years of hard work, serious physical discomfort before going to the hospital for examination, a check, the result is like a thunderbolt on a sunny day: cancer, advanced stage! The patient is miserable, the cost is expensive, the family is exhausted... Practicing medicine for many years, such a heavy case, Hua Yawei has seen too much.

According to the national tumor registration center, more than 80% of patients with common tumors such as lung cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer, and bowel cancer are in the middle and advanced stages when they visit the hospital, which not only misses the best time for treatment, but also causes a huge burden of medical expenses.

"The world's recognized effective path to reduce cancer incidence and mortality, and the most economical and effective health strategy, is early cancer screening, early diagnosis, early treatment." Hua Yawei said in an interview with the Dahe Newspaper Yu video reporter that accelerating the establishment of an early cancer screening system in the mainland is imminent and of great significance.

He mentioned a set of data — in the United States, the overall cancer mortality rate was 2.15.1 per 100,000 in 1991 and had fallen to 1.587 per 100,000 in 2015, a 26 percent drop. Behind this, it is inseparable from the development of cancer screening for people over the age of 48.

"The World Health Organization believes that one-third of cancers can be prevented through primary prevention to avoid cancer; one-third of cancers can be cured through early screening, early diagnosis, and early treatment; and one-third of cancers, found late, can only prolong survival and improve the quality of life through treatment, but in the treatment process, the investment is large, the cost is high, the social burden is heavy, and the patient also has to bear multiple pressures such as physical and psychological." In Hua Yawei's view, in terms of early treatment technology for stomach cancer and other cancers, the mainland is not lagging behind Japan and South Korea, but there is still a big gap in early screening and early diagnosis.

Speaking for the fight against cancer

Over the years, Hua Yawei has been "speaking for the fight against cancer".

"Many people will ask after diagnosis: Why do you get cancer? This question is not easy to answer, because the mechanism of tumor occurrence is extremely complex, which is the result of the long-term joint action of many factors and many aspects, and it is by no means a simple relationship of 'cause and effect'. Hua Yawei sighed that the current level of human technology has not been fully studied thoroughly, which has also greatly increased the degree of difficulty in its prevention and control.

However, there is one thing he is very sure of: at present, the development of artificial intelligence and new medical technologies for human beings to provide more convenient, low-cost cancer screening means, the top priority is to improve the public's awareness of cancer prevention, if the publicity of cancer prevention and treatment is as deeply rooted in the hearts of the people as washing hands before meals, coupled with the cancer "three early" project vigorously promoted, then the middle and advanced stages of tumor patients can be greatly reduced.

And if "only cure and do not prevent", it is easy to "cure more and get busier".

Because of this, for many years, Hua Yawei has paid attention to cancer prevention and treatment during the two sessions of the National People's Congress, and in the "Proposal on Further Strengthening and Improving the Comprehensive Cancer Prevention and Control System" put forward by him, it is recommended to formulate guidelines for early screening and early diagnosis and early treatment of gastric cancer, esophageal cancer, lung cancer and other cancers with high incidence and mature screening methods, and include early tumor screening in the scope of medical insurance reimbursement.

At the two sessions of the National People's Congress this year, a proposal he prepared is still related to this: it is recommended that the health department take the lead and accelerate the establishment of an early cancer screening system that meets China's national conditions and an overall prevention and control system for specific cancer species, include cancer early screening projects and products in the medical insurance or commercial insurance payment directory, especially include the anti-cancer screening that high-risk groups regularly participate in every year into the scope of outpatient medical insurance payment, so that more people can be screened and affordable, and the rate of early diagnosis and early treatment can be improved.

Advice for a healthy China

Healing is not sick, preventing disease before it happens. Compared with treating diseases and saving people, Hua Yawei hopes that the comprehensive health awareness will continue to improve, and the threshold of cancer prevention and anti-cancer will continue to move forward.

Go to bed early, get up early, eat rough tea and light meals, walk a few kilometers a day to exercise, listen to music on the road, and enjoy your body and mind... Although the work is very busy, the humorous and talkative Hua Yawei has always maintained a self-disciplined lifestyle, and actively becomes a practitioner, promoter and popularizer of health science knowledge and healthy lifestyle.

"Advocating a healthy and scientific lifestyle can be summarized in 20 words, namely: less salt and more vinegar, smoking and alcohol cessation, balanced diet, adequate sleep, and moderate exercise." Hua Yawei said that maintaining a healthy lifestyle, the probability of cancer will naturally be greatly reduced.

This is also reflected in the "Healthy China 2030" planning outline, which clearly states that to promote the construction of a healthy China, we must adhere to the principle of prevention, promote a healthy and civilized lifestyle, create a green and safe healthy environment, and reduce the occurrence of diseases.

However, there are always some people who do not care about their bodies and think of a doctor when they are sick. "You know, medicine has boundaries, and doctors can only do what they can within the boundaries, but they are not omnipotent." Hua Yawei stressed, "National health is not only a matter for medical staff, the best doctors are themselves." ”

The profound feelings in work and research have made Hua Yawei speak out for the people again and again. During the second session of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, he submitted the "Proposal on Strengthening the Work of National Fitness", calling for strengthening the top-level design of the development of the national fitness cause, establishing a diversified input mechanism, accelerating the construction of national fitness venues and facilities, and improving the level of fitness services and scientific levels. This proposal, which stands on the standpoint of the whole people and from a professional perspective, has a strong response and has been selected as a good proposal of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in 2019.

On Hua Yawei's desk, there is a white laparoscopic surgery simulator, and he never forgets to do a good job in oncology surgery, but also to practice his hands from time to time, which is the mission of the doctor. He believes that as medicine continues to evolve, it can help cure more tumor patients and better protect life.

In his office computer, there is an exclusive folder that holds all his proposals since he became a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in 2013, involving online sharing of high-quality teaching resources, strengthening the supervision of single-purpose commercial prepaid cards, preventing and controlling myopia among teenagers, and secretly taking pictures and being sentenced. This year, the proposals he prepared also include strengthening the construction of youth activity venues and accelerating the improvement of the brain health management system for the elderly.

Over the years, Hua Yawei has always maintained a keen sense of social smell, spoken from the heart, and conveyed the will of the people in order to relieve the people's worries, and as a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, he feels that his mission is glorious and he does not allow slackening off in the slightest.
