It is reported that the patient, Mr. Zhou, underwent total tongue resection surgery in the head and neck surgery department of the hospital in June 2021 due to tongue cancer, and received several cycles of radiation therapy after the operation. Due to the treatment, his swallowing function was seriously affected, and by November 2021, he could hardly eat on his own, and the doctors, after comprehensive evaluation, placed him indwelling with a gastrostomy to meet the body's nutritional needs. After indwelling gastrostomy, he could only inject food through the gastric tube every day, and Mr. Zhou felt very uncomfortable, and repeatedly expressed to the medical staff that he hoped to quickly restore the swallowing function and eat on his own.

To this end, Shi Liuqing, head nurse of the department, and Zou Lu, a national rehabilitation nurse, screened and evaluated Mr. Zhou's swallowing function and formulated a rehabilitation training program. In response to his sore mouth when swallowing and the easy coughing of drinking water, the nursing team added thickener to liquid food to guide him to swallow the lumpy food. After half a month of training, he can swallow the lumpy food, but he will still cough when drinking water, and the nursing team adjusts the training plan in time and continues to train at home. In January 2022, Mr. Zhou's swallowing function was basically restored. The first time he came to the hospital after the Spring Festival, he thanked the medical staff and asked for the removal of the gastrostomy, he said: "During the New Year, I ate and drank quite normally, and I was worried that the gastric tube was not working, but now I am completely at ease." ”
