Nie Er (1912-1935), formerly known as Nie Shouxin, zi yi (also known as Ziyi), a native of Yuxi, Yunnan. In 1927, he was admitted to the Yunnan Provincial First Normal School. In 1932, he joined the Shanghai Lianhua Film Company. He joined the Communist Party of China in early 1933. In 1934, he joined the EMI Records Company and organized the EMI National Band. In January 1935, he rejoined Lianhua Pictures as the director of the music department. On July 17, 1935, he drowned while swimming on the shores of Theonuma Beach in Japan.

Representative works include "March of the Volunteer Army", "Road Song", "Dock Worker", "New Woman", "Graduation Song", "Flying Flower Song", "Singer Under the Iron Hoof", "Selling Newspaper Song", "Plum Niang Song", etc., with a distinct sense of the times, excellent artistry and high national spirit. Guo Moruo inscribed his epitaph "The Clarion Call of the Chinese Revolution, the Drum of the People's Liberation".

From the autumn of 1927 to the winter of 1928, after three examinations, he was admitted to the foreign Chinese group of the senior department of yunnan provincial first normal school, majoring in English, he had a wide range of hobbies and versatility. Determined to transform society, in 1928, he secretly joined the Communist Youth League of China, and on the eve of graduation, he learned that he was in danger of being arrested, and with the help of his family, he hurriedly fled Kunming and arrived in Shanghai.

At a very low income, Nie Er insisted on learning foreign languages and music. After losing his job, he applied for the famous "Father of Chinese Pop Music" Li Jinhui's trainees, Li Jinhui was discerning and talented, and admitted him as a band trainee. While the trainees were attracted by the prosperity of Shanghai and ate, drink and play, Nie Er always insisted on strictly training his musical skills.

The young and spontaneous Nie Er "turned his face" with his mentor Lai Jinhui, criticized Li Jinhui's pop music, and left the Mingyue Song and Dance Society. Later, he applied for the Violin Selection Department of Shanghai National Conservatory of Music and was not admitted. Nie Er entered the film circle and quickly found his own position in the film industry with his erudition and became a songwriter.

In the bustling Shanghai, the impetuous city, Nie Er has sunk and lost, but the original intention of transforming society makes Nie Er insist on returning to the track of his idealist. At the beginning of 1935, Nie Er, with his stubborn character, the spirit of struggle, and his responsibility for the motherland, completed the composition of the "March of the Volunteer Army".

It took 14 years from the creation of the "March of the Volunteer Army" in 1935 to the designation of the national anthem, 33 years to the official designation of the national anthem, 22 years to the writing of the Constitution, and 13 years to the formulation of the National Anthem Law of the People's Republic of China in 2017. The "March of the Volunteer Army", which is only 84 words, has been sung in the land of China for 86 years, and the spirit of the Chinese nation it represents has been deeply integrated into the blood of Chinese.

During the Revolutionary War, we stood up singing the "March of the Volunteer Army"! After the founding of the People's Republic of China, we sang the "March of the Volunteer Army" and became rich! Today, we sing the "March of the Volunteer Army" and strive to realize the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
