Like the Great Wall, BAIC is actually an off-road "old cannon", and even built off-road vehicles earlier than the Great Wall. However, the development in recent years is not the same, especially after the emergence of the Tank 300, the Great Wall has occupied more than 50% of the hardcore off-road vehicle market, completely throwing BAIC away.

(1) Blunt brand, a history of research and development that is difficult to describe
Speaking of BAIC's off-road vehicle tradition, BJ 212 is an unavoidable name. It was born in 1965, not only is it the earliest ORV off-road vehicle in China, but also one of the most representative domestic models.
This car has been produced for nearly 60 years, and it was not until the end of last year that BAIC released a trailer for a new generation of models for the first time, which can be said to be a veritable "old antique" and a "living fossil" for the automobile industry.
BJ 212 has a very long history, the original model is actually based on the "Dongfang Hong" sedan, the power, transmission system are from the "Dongfang Hong" car, the body, the transfer case, the front axle is based on the needs of off-road vehicles. Later, BAIC cooperated with Jeep and absorbed some of the Cherokee's technology, further improving the BJ 212 through improvement and technical grafting.
BAIC's top management is very comfortable with the BJ 212, otherwise it would not have been produced for nearly 60 years. But from another dimension, it actually represents the research and development level of BAIC, that is, it can only engage in some patchwork of technical grafting. Some people say that baiqi's several off-road vehicles, that is, BJ 212 and a few of its friends, also have some truth.
Taking BAIC's key model BJ40 as an example, it was actually listed earlier than the Haval H9 of the Great Wall, and it can be said that it was the earliest domestic hardcore SUV. But there has been no own assembly, the earliest use of Shenyang Xinguang Huaxiang 2.4L naturally aspirated engine, of course, the power is weak, fuel consumption is high, word of mouth has not risen. Later, he spent a lot of effort to introduce the 2.0T and 2.3T engines eliminated by Saab, and the effect was also not good, after all, if it was good, it would be so easy to sell to you.
Later, the introduction of the Great Wall's 2.0T engine finally saved some reputation. You should know that in the field of building off-road vehicles, the Great Wall can be regarded as a latecomer. Today's BAIC off-road vehicles rely on the engine of the Great Wall to survive, and it is a bit bitter to think about.
Therefore, it is undoubtedly a little difficult for BAIC to "counterattack" the Great Wall. It is very impractical to pin even hope on the BJ60. Because this brand has been extremely blunt, it is better to push down and use a new brand to fight the reality, but BAIC seems to have lost the courage to go head-to-head with the Great Wall.
(2) It is powerless to touch the porcelain tank 500, and it is difficult to hit the tank 300
Speaking of BJ60, the official information now is to challenge the tank 500 model. Leaving aside the huge differences in the brand image of the two, there is no comparison in terms of strength alone.
Although the body size of the 5020*1955*1925mm is only slightly smaller than that of the tank 500, it is also divided into 5/7 seats, but the positioning of the two is not related.
For example, the tank 500 is equipped with a new 3.0T turbocharged engine independently developed by the Great Wall and a 9AT gearbox that is also independently developed, which is the latest golden powertrain of the Great Wall and has quite powerful performance. Take its 3.0T V6 engine as an example, the maximum horsepower is 354 horses, the maximum torque is 500Nm, under the blessing of the new electronically controlled turbocharger, it can reach the maximum torque at 1500rpm, which lasts until 4500rpm, this performance, even if it is not inferior to the 3.0T engine of BMW and Audi. Its 9AT longitudinal transmission is also very powerful, with a maximum load carrying capacity of 600 Nm, and the dedicated hybrid version can carry a torque shock of 750 Nm.
This set of "equipment" is taken out, and BAIC really can't fight. Judging from the price positioning of BJ60, it does basically abandon this idea.
The other opponent, tank 300, is actually not so good at "catching". First of all, from the design point of view, baiqi's set of design language, the visual impact is far inferior to the tank 300. Secondly, in terms of performance, BJ60 also relies on the engine of the Great Wall, but the matching ability is far inferior to that of the Great Wall. And the tank 300 itself 0-100km/h acceleration performance is about 9.5 seconds, replaced by a larger body, weaker matching ability of the BJ60, I am afraid that the acceleration will be in 12 seconds.
This is also very hurtful for off-road vehicles. After all, users at this level are not bought to walk, more to see its performance, passability, BJ60 has suffered a lot of losses in this regard.
Therefore, the positioning of BJ60 seems to be very "wonderful", you can hit the tank 500 up and the tank 300 down, but the actual situation is more likely to be unable to hit one.
(3) Lack of intelligence, the extender just looks beautiful?
In addition to the lack of basic performance, BAIC also has a fatal weakness, that is, the degree of intelligence is insufficient, which will also be a weakness for models of this level.
First of all, from the interior of the new car exposure, the sense of technology is very missing, although replaced by a large screen, but the entire layout is very messy, there is no sense of grade. Secondly, the new car will use a time-sharing four-wheel drive system, that is, the middle of the front and rear axles are hard connected with a relay, and the cornering after hanging up the four-wheel drive is difficult, and the driver needs to judge the road conditions and manually operate the drive mode.
For users, how to operate the time-sharing four-wheel drive system has always been a problem, after all, the new generation of users are not all off-road "old guns". Therefore, the off-road vehicle is either equipped with a full-time four-wheel drive system, that is, the fuel consumption is slightly higher, or it is equipped with a timely four-wheel drive system, although the mechanical ability is rarely lacking, but the advantage is that the control is accurate and responsive.
Take the Great Wall's tank 300 as an example, it is equipped with BorgWarner's latest generation of timely four-wheel drive system, and equipped with off-road functions such as tank turning and creeping mode, so that young users with zero foundation can easily go off-road. And the BJ60 design, the "old cannon" can not see, young people can not use, is really a little embarrassing.
Then there is the current "hot fried" range extender hybrid version, is BAIC really sure that it is suitable for BJ60? The advantage of extended range is actually more in the urban commuting, because the motor output is stable and efficient at low and medium speeds, and the engine only needs to generate electricity in the efficient range. For example, the ideal ONE and Xuanyi e-POWER, they are both examples of urban energy consumption below high speed.
However, off-road vehicles need a stronger power output, in which case the efficiency of the motor is not high, and the load on the engine will be particularly large. The end result is that the performance does not go up, and the fuel consumption goes up. Otherwise, with the Great Wall technology, can not do a range extender hybrid? Do you need to wait until BAIC discovers the New World?
At least the Great Wall has also planned a hybrid version for the tank series, using a DHT hybrid system, a medium-high-speed engine involved in direct drive, and a motor to ensure power output, this design is obviously more suitable for off-road vehicles. Therefore, these points vigorously advocated by BAIC are probably not very competitive.
(4) Kung Fu shooting
Judging from the information conveyed by the major media, BJ60 can be described as menacing. But it has to be said that the BJ series of model technology has been quite aging, the brand has been very blunt, young, intelligent is not good enough. If you really want to defeat the tank series, I am afraid that there are not many opportunities, and it is good to be able to keep the existing share.
Including the Great Wall tank series, the success is also due to years of brewing and technical investment, BAIC does not expect to achieve overnight. It is best to set a small goal first, such as selling two thousand units a month, so that it is more practical.
