Guoping Zhao(赵国屏), Ph.D., Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology, Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences

Guoping Zhao, a molecular microbiologist, is mainly engaged in the regulation of microbial metabolism and the structural function relationship and reaction mechanism of enzymes. Born in August 1948, Shanghainese. He graduated from Fudan University in 1982 and received his Ph.D. from Purdue University in 1990. In 2005, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2011, he was elected a fellow of the Academy of Sciences of Developing Countries and in 2014, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Purdue University.

Zhao Guoping is mainly engaged in the study of microbial physiological biochemistry, metabolic regulation and enzyme mechanism. Since 1998, he has led the establishment of genomics research platforms and systems, participated in the research of human disease genomes, and cloned a number of human genetic disease pathogenic genes. Launched research on biochips, bioinformatics, and proteomics; participated in the establishment of a human HapMap research technology platform. Initiated the sequencing of microbial genomes in China and presided over the research of genomes, functional genomes, comparative and evolutionary genomes of several important microorganisms. Academician Zhao Guoping actively explores the field of systematic synthetic biology research, and has made pioneering work in the regulation of microbial metabolism, including the study of acetylatation modification after translation of metabolic enzymes.

Academician Zhao Guoping led the major research project of the human genome of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1998; from 2001 to 2003, he completed the cloning of the disease-causing genes of milky teeth and the whole genome sequencing of the question mark leptospiratorium; from 2003 to 2005, he revealed the evolutionary mechanism of the SARS coronavirus; in 2010, he revealed that the metabolic enzyme "acetylation group" is a universal regulatory mechanism in organisms; in 2018, a number of cell factories were developed and the first case of "single-chromosome brewer's yeast" was constructed.
