Kang Le, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences: Will develop diagnostic and therapeutic drugs for allergic asthma

On December 12, at the 2021 Greater Bay Area Science Forum Life Science Sub-Forum, Kang Le, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, president of Hebei University and researcher of Guangzhou Laboratory, delivered a keynote report on "Dust Mites and Allergies".

He said that according to WHO statistics on asthma, 260 million people worldwide are affected by asthma every year, of which 60% to 80% are allergic asthma. As a common chronic disease, children have a higher incidence than adults, and generally rely on inhaled drug therapy and avoidance of exposure to allergens to control the occurrence of the disease.

"There are many causes of asthma, including pets, pollen, smoking, pollution, smog, etc., the most important of which is dust mites. The high temperature and high humidity environment is suitable for the survival of dust mites, and the detection rate of these two mites in Guangzhou is high, reaching more than 80%, and July to September is the peak period. ”

He said that allergic asthma can be caused by different allergens, and the immune process of allergic reactions of different dust mites is both similar and different. There are cross-reflections between different allergens, such as dust mites and pollen, indicating that allergic asthma has both genetic and environmental factors. "In the future, we will develop diagnostic drugs and therapeutic drugs."
