I believe that many people are familiar with ibuprofen, especially female friends.

Stomach ache, eating ibuprofen...

Migraine of the head, a piece of ibuprofen...

Fever, ibuprofen, arrangement...

Even many people eat ibuprofen wherever it hurts, so is ibuprofen really a universal painkiller? What are the side effects of eating too much?

Let's take a look at it today.

Is ibuprofen a panacea?

Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug with analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects. It reduces prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting epoxygenase, thereby reducing tissue congestion, swelling and sensitivity to peripheral neural pain. In addition, it can also exert antipyretic (commonly known as "fever") by acting on the hypothalamic thermoregulation center.

Ibuprofen relieves a variety of pains, including headache, joint pain, migraine, toothache, muscle pain, neuralgia, dysmenorrhea, postoperative pain, low back pain, post-exercise injurious pain, pain caused by strain, tenosynovitis, bursitis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, other non-rheumatoid arthritis, and acute gout.

The efficacy of ibuprofen covers almost all kinds of pain encountered in daily life, but please note that when encountering certain pains, blindly taking painkillers may delay the disease.

One of the most dangerous is pain caused by heart disease, which can cause cardiac toothache, back pain, shoulder pain, chest pain when the heart disease occurs. Seek medical attention as soon as possible when it occurs, and do not take painkillers on your own to delay the best treatment time.

Who is not suitable for ibuprofen?

1. Pregnant women are banned

Ibuprofen may pass through the placenta, causing damage to the fetus, and use at more than 20 weeks can cause fetal kidney damage while increasing the risk of amniotic fluid insufficiency.

2. Lactating women

Ibuprofen can enter breast milk, and lactating women need to stop breastfeeding if they take the drug.

3. Women who are trying to conceive

Ovulation can be delayed or prevented, causing reversible infertility, so women planning to become pregnant should use this drug with caution, and those who have difficulty conceiving or are undergoing infertility tests should consider discontinuing the drug.

4. Patients with peptic ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding

Ibuprofen is able to inhibit the activity of epoxygenase 1, which protects the gastrointestinal mucosa, aggravating ulcers or bleeding.

5. Patients with heart disease

Oral high-dose (≥2400 mg/day) ibuprofen increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, and the risk increases with dose and duration of administration.

6. Patients with liver disease and kidney disease

Because ibuprofen is metabolized by the liver and excreted by the kidneys, taking ibuprofen may aggravate the condition of such patients.

What are the side effects of eating too much ibuprofen?

After normal use of ibuprofen, the following side effects may occur: nausea, vomiting, burning sensation, mild indigestion, headache, dizziness, tinnitus, blurred vision, nervousness, drowsiness, lower extremity edema or sudden weight gain.

If overdose or prolonged use, it may cause serious side effects, including severe gastrointestinal reactions (eg, bleeding, ulceration, perforation, manifested as hematemesis, melena, abdominal pain, bloating, etc.), severe cardiovascular thrombotic events (which may manifest as chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, slurred speech, etc.), and severe skin reactions (eg, exfoliative dermatitis, Schloss syndrome).

Precautions for taking ibuprofen?

It is best not to use ibuprofen for a long time or in large quantities, do not exceed 5 days when used for analgesia, and do not exceed 3 days when used for antipyretic.

Drinking alcohol during medication may increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and serious cardiovascular side effects, please avoid drinking alcohol or beverages containing alcohol.

Ibuprofen may inhibit your coagulation function and may bleed more easily after medication, so use soft-bristled toothbrushes and electric razors.

Please do not take other medications that contain antipyretic and analgesic components at the same time, especially be aware that some combination cold medicines may contain NSAIDs.

Ibuprofen may induce or worsen high blood pressure, and it is recommended that you monitor your blood pressure closely during medication. If you are concerned about an overdose of medication, go to the hospital to monitor the blood concentration of ibuprofen.
