Intel Resurrects THE HEDT Product Line: MCM package up to 56 cores

Since the release of the 10th generation OF HEDT high-end desktop processors in 2019, Intel has not launched a new HEDT product for more than two years, and it is rumored that Intel has cut this product line. But the latest news says Intel may launch Golden Cove high-performance core HEDT products in the second half of 2022, mainly the Sapphire Rapids-AP product line.

In a recent leaked benchmark with Xeon CPU, blogger @Knotjo Yasuho-YuuKi_AnS said Intel is mulling a new lineup of Sapphire Rapids-AP. Among them, the "AP" suffix has been used in the flagship Cascade Lake-AP product line using MCM multi-chip solutions; The Sapphire Rapids-SP column has been designed with 4 MCM sets and each chip has up to 15 cores (14 of which Intel enables).

Sapphire Rapids-SP can be considered a derivative of "AP", and Intel appears to have decided to use the "AP" (-X) suffix in the header of the HEDT product line. Previously, it was also reported that although the HEDT product line is aimed at the desktop market, Intel prefers to put it in the workstation market. Intel looks intent on further segmenting the Sapphire Rapids HEDT market to cover both workstation and mainstream workstation platforms.

As a product in an MCM package, the Sapphire Rapids family includes a number of SKUs, and the flagship thermal design power consumption (TDP) can easily exceed 350W. Foreign media believe that Intel will prepare four SKUs/three different platform configurations, and the Sapphire Rapids-SP XCC chip for the server market will not become part of the Xeon Workstation HEDT series.

As the successor to the 2020 Ice Lake-W family, Sapphire Rapids-SP offers up to 56 Golden Cove high-performance cores (12 cores for the entry-level model) with turbo frequencies above 4GHz. In addition, Sapphire Rapids HEDT also integrates various on-chip accelerators, and it is unclear whether the retail version of the SKU is blocked.

Editor's Note: Since the launch of the 10th generation OF HEDT products in 2019, Intel has stopped updating the HEDT product line. Although the revelations contain many HEDT products, how Intel will provide the corresponding motherboard support is still unknown, after all, after stopping updating for more than two years, the existing X299 chipset no longer seems to meet the needs of professional users, whether it is the same C621 chipset as the server, or the launch of a chipset for the consumer market, is also the focus of players' attention.

On the other hand, Intel resurrected the HEDT product line, and its target population is not gamers and semi-professional users; in fact, Intel's 12th generation Core has been able to meet the performance needs of these users. In addition to the pursuit of launching HIT out to meet the needs of fever users, Intel should hope to further distinguish the boundaries between professional servers and HEDT through HITT. Future HEDT motherboards will also feature the Scotket P (LGA 3647) processor interface.
