Aston Martin wants to match the top teams in the development race

Aston Martin has set a high goal for himself and is committed to keeping up, competing with top teams Mercedes and Red Bull in 2022.

On Thursday, Aston Martin unveiled their new car, the AMR22, F1, into a new era of technical rules that have dramatically changed the look and feel of the car.

In the 2020 season, the team almost copied Mercedes' 2019 season car, which surprised people. The team has been in the lead in the race, with team driver Sergio Perez scoring an unexpected victory at the Sakhir Grand Prix.

In the 2021 season, as the aerodynamic rules changed, Aston Martin fell into a trough, with them finishing fourth in the constructors' standings in 2020 and seventh in 2021.

F1 introduced a cost cap for the 2021 season, and the team had to limit spending to $145 million, which fell to $140 million this season.

Aston Martin's chief technology officer, Andrew Green, believes the team can maximize its level of development on a budget.

He said: "I hope that under the cost cap, we can upgrade as frequently as Mercedes and Red Bull, we are still trying to reach the cost ceiling, that's for sure, this year we will be very close, next year we will hit the ceiling." ”

In 2018, when the force India team was facing bankruptcy, Lawrence Stoll bought the team at the last minute to guarantee they would be able to appear on the 2019 race. The Canadian business giant renamed the fleet Aston Martin and invested new investments to secure the construction of the new facility.

Believing the team can continue to upgrade throughout the season, Green explains: "The team's finances are very good, our cash is no longer limited, what we are limited is the resources we have, the tools we have to develop the car, and to make the right decisions when developing the car. I think that's really some of the obstacles we're running into, and that's where we're going to try to improve in the coming years. ”
