In 2015, Beijing and Zhangjiakou City obtained the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, and a series of Winter Olympic projects settled in Shougang, ushering in the transformation and upgrading opportunities of the century-old factory that has been silent for a long time. In line with the concept of "simple, safe and wonderful", Shougang transformed the original industrial retention into offices, training grounds, and even competition venues. In addition to the big jumping platform, the "four pieces of ice" (short track speed skating, figure skating, curling, ice hockey) and the Winter Training Center of the State General Administration of Sport, the "home" of the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee was installed here even five years ago, and their office was in the former iron ore silo.

A group of industrial relics composed of 6 giant reinforced concrete circular silos standing side by side, nearly 40 meters high and more than 20 meters in diameter, air transport corridors, transfer stations, etc., have become the "home" of the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee through the designers' "clever hands".
Retaining the industrial landscape helps the Green Winter Olympics
Originally a raw material area for Shougang ironmaking, Xishi Silo was built in 1992, when it was grouped in the train transportation system as the West Ten Lines, hence the name and is still used today. In 2008, in order to implement the overall urban planning of Beijing, solve environmental protection problems, and welcome the Olympic Games, shougang's production department was relocated as a whole, and the West Ten Silos and surrounding industrial buildings have been abandoned. In 2013, the West Ten Silo Transformation Project was listed by the National Development and Reform Commission as the first batch of pilot projects for the relocation and transformation of old industrial zones in the country, and began to transform 6 silos and one silo, planning to build this area into a creative industry park that not only retains the industrial heritage, but also adapts to the needs of modern offices. This is also the first renovation project of Shougang Beijing Park.
Duan Ruofei, the chief planner of the Winter Olympic Plaza project in the West Ten Silo District, told reporters that the office area of the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee was mainly transformed by using the original industrial plants and structures, which preserved the industrial style to the greatest extent and retained the historical memory of Beijing's old industry. After the transformation, the original industrial structures have been able to fully meet the needs of the office, realize the protection and reuse of industrial heritage, and also reflect the concept of green Olympic Games. The No. 5 and No. 6 silos settled in the first phase of the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee are responsible for the architectural design of the British Sirui Architectural Design Office, and the interior design is carried out by the China Architectural Design and Research Institute. At present, 9 departments and 2 operating centers of the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee have been settled. After the renovation of other buildings in the office area is completed, it can basically meet the office needs of all departments of the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee that gradually increase with the progress of preparations.
Every brick under the foot is an industrial relic
The reporter saw that the No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 silos adjacent to Silo No. 5 and No. 6 have also been renovated and renovated. Duan Ruofei introduced, in order to make the silos appear different styles after the transformation, they selected different design units through bidding in groups of every two silos. The original six silos of exactly the same size and shape have been remodeled to show a completely different effect. Silos No. 3 and No. 4 have multiple triangles and rectangular shapes on the walls, like "tangrams" played by children. Silos No. 1 and No. 2 are "minimalist", so that the silo wall directly becomes the external wall of the office, and only a few square holes are opened on each floor as windows.
"Transforming decades-old iron ore silos into modern office buildings was a new challenge for the design unit. In terms of cost, it is about one-third to one-half higher than that of new office buildings, and there are many additional difficulties. Duan Ruofei pointed to a window on Silo No. 1 and said, "Before opening each window, strict structural inspection must be carried out, followed by penetrating the reinforced concrete wall of nearly 1 meter thick, laying new reinforcement, and finally making the newly poured concrete old." ”
These old industrial materials that have been cut and chiseled off are not wasted. In the West Ten Silo office area, the concrete round cake left when the window is opened becomes an outdoor decorative seat; the permeable bricks paved on the walkway and the square are the result of the recycling of construction waste; the landscape next to the walkway uses the factory track sleepers; some of the lighting equipment is removed from the old factory building of the Shougang Second Profile Factory; and some of the waste materials and facilities are artistically reprocessed to become landscape sketches.
Duan Ruofei said that the preservation, transformation and reuse of industrial relics in the park, given new uses, so that the West Ten Silos accompanied by steel memories, from industrial buildings to the office area of the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee, in line with the pursuit of Olympic culture.

Peng Jianjun, director of the Shougang Publicity Department, said that this is the best combination point between natural landscapes and industrial relics, and in the future, other workshops, silos and industrial buildings nearby will be transformed into Winter Olympic staff dormitories, medical logistics centers, etc., so that this area will become a Winter Olympic Square.
Peng Jianjun said that in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Shougang relocated its main production plant to Caofeidian, Hebei Province, and the old factory started a transformation journey. At the beginning of 2016, the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee chose the office space, shougang's West Ten Silo Phase I transformation is ready to rent, it sent materials to the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee, did not expect to stand out from nearly 100 alternative locations. After the Winter Olympics, this area will become a creative industry park and an industrial heritage landscape open to the public, and Shougang will use the Winter Olympics to realize the upgrading and transformation of the old factory area to a new format.
