The removed component is an electronic control unit in the vehicle's steering system that transmits steering signals to the wheels, mainly for L3 autonomous driving. At present, most cars still use mechanical steering devices, which are steered by motors and gears.
For now, Tesla's autopilot technology is still at the L2 level, and it basically does not use the steering electronic control unit. But the electronic control unit is equivalent to the "spare tire" in the vehicle steering system, and once the mechanical control is in trouble, the electronic control unit will come in handy.
