Javier Varela, Head of Engineering and Operations at Volvo Cars, said: "Our new battery plant will support us in building a manufacturing network that is completely unaffected by the environmental climate and will ensure the introduction of high-quality batteries in the coming years. "Volvo has partnered with Northvolt to truly implement an end-to-end battery system that will improve the range and performance of its self-developed high-quality batteries and charging times. The plant's annual battery capacity is expected to be as high as 50GWh, which can meet the battery demand of about 500,000 cars per year and is used in Volvo and Polestar models.
According to overseas media reports, the new plant will begin operations this year, and Volvo and Northvolt will work together to make batteries that can provide long range and fast charging for electric vehicles. Mass production of the new batteries is expected to begin in 2025, and the upcoming battery plant will require up to 3,000 workers to operate and will be one of the largest battery manufacturing plants in Europe.
