Apple may add Face ID recognition to the next generation of 24-inch iMacs

February 7 news, according to foreign media reports, Apple is considering adding support for Face ID to its updated 24-inch iMac. It's more likely to add biometric security features to desktop Mac displays before the new MacBook Pro is released.

In fact, Apple introduced bangs last year in the displays of the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros, giving Apple the imagination to bring Face ID technology from the iPhone to the Mac.

While bangs strongly point to it as an integral part of the future, Apple seems to be looking in a different direction for the transition period.

According to Mark Gurman in his Bloomberg "Power On" column, Apple first really considered applying Face ID to the Mac, which was planned to be first launched on the 24-inch iMac with M1 chip instead of the MacBook Pro, but the product arrangement has changed somewhat.

But the iMac implementing it at the moment apparently has little technical resistance, as its display is thick enough to easily install components. In contrast, the MacBook series has a fairly thin screen bezel that can accommodate FaceTime HD cameras, but doesn't have enough depth to meet the needs of Face ID's work.

Because of the MacBook's limited thickness, Gurman believes that if Face ID does appear on a Mac, it will "first appear on an iMac or external display." Obviously, Apple has certainly been working on this issue, but time will tell if they launch it or not.

Gurman's comments echoed previous reports on the issue, including one in January 2021 saying that Apple had been working on the feature, but it was simply unlikely to arrive in 2021. By July of the same year, it was estimated that Face ID would be transferred to Mac desktop products within a few years.

While it seems difficult for Apple to update the new 24-inch iMac that was just released last year this year, there will still be a new 27-inch iMac Pro with a new design this year.

Since the 24-inch iMac and the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros that started last year have just adopted self-developed chips and fingerprint recognition with the upper right corner of the keyboard, we will hardly see the possibility of Face ID being applied to Mac computers in the short term.
