China will set up a special agency to promote cooperation with overseas semiconductor companies

Recently, according to foreign media reports, China plans to set up a Cross-Border Semiconductor Work Committee to create a chip research and development and manufacturing platform, with the goal of promoting cooperation between Chinese companies and international semiconductor giants such as Intel and accelerating the realization of chip self-sufficiency.

The Cross-Border Semiconductor Working Committee, which is expected to be launched in the first half of this year, will be overseen by China's Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and Tsinghua University's laboratories will also cooperate with the plan to jointly establish a research and development center for software, materials and manufacturing equipment.

According to sources, the role of the committee is to strengthen cooperation between the Chinese and foreign semiconductor industries, and China aims to establish an independent chip supply chain and plans to introduce advanced semiconductor technology from the United States, Japan and Europe to help the country achieve the goal of self-sufficiency.

The committee will encourage cooperation between Chinese and foreign companies and research institutions, and will also invite international companies to establish R&D or manufacturing bases by cooperating with local governments, providing funds, and possibly providing financial assistance to Chinese companies planning to acquire international semiconductor companies.

Potential international partners will include Intel, AMD, Infineon, as well as a number of dutch industry partners, including ASML, a leader in advanced process equipment.
