Northern Shaanxi folk songs have a long history, the earliest can be traced back to the middle of the Zhou Dynasty, prevailing in Yulin City, Yan'an City, mainly there are more than 20 kinds of Xintianyou, Minor, Yulin Xiaoqu and so on.

The Ming Dynasty immigration movement led to the large-scale development of the population in northern Shaanxi, where the mongolian, Hui and Han ethnic cultures were integrated, and the integration of Folk Songs, Daoqing, Yulin Minor, Folk Songs, etc. with local cultures formed a unique folk art in northern Shaanxi. In the middle of the Qing Dynasty, a large number of men in the counties of northern Shaanxi went north to work and trafficked, resulting in a large number of folk songs of "walking west mouth", such as "walking west mouth" and "driving out animal spirits".

"Before the 1930s, folk songs in northern Shaanxi were improvised and sung by the people of northern Shaanxi in life scenes such as labor, festivals, weddings and funerals, and temple fairs." Wan Shengkai, a staff member of the Northern Shaanxi Folk Song Museum, said.

In 1935, with the Long March of the Party Central Committee and the Central Red Army arriving in northern Shaanxi, the Chinese revolution entered a new historical period. It was also during this period that the folk songs of northern Shaanxi ushered in a period of development.

"The east is red, the sun is rising, China has a Mao Zedong, he seeks happiness for the people, he is the great savior of the people..." This well-known folk song in northern Shaanxi, "Dongfang Hong", was composed by Li Youyuan, a farmer in Jia County.

Entering a new era, northern Shaanxi folk songs have kept pace with the times, and many songs with northern Shaanxi styles have come into being. "Yulin Mei" and "Love Northern Shaanxi" have become representatives of newly created songs, singing the happy life of the people. Yulin Grand Theatre's original product "Song from Northern Shaanxi" has achieved normalized performances, allowing the audience to feel the profound heritage and infinite charm of folk songs in northern Shaanxi.

On May 23, 2018, the Northern Shaanxi Folk Song Museum, located in the northeast corner of the intersection of Jinsha Road and Hongshan East Road in Yuyang District, Yulin City, was officially opened to the public. As the only thematic museum in China that takes the culture of northern Shaanxi as the element, takes the folk music of northern Shaanxi as the main body, reflects the historical changes of northern Shaanxi, embodies the historical and humanistic spirit of northern Shaanxi, and integrates the research and creation of folk songs, training exchanges, performing arts promotion, and product research and development, the Museum of Folk Songs of Northern Shaanxi has become a new cultural landmark on the Loess Plateau.

In the Northern Shaanxi Folk Song Museum, the six featured sections use pictures and texts, audio-visual experience and scene restoration to comprehensively display the development context and story of northern Shaanxi folk songs, and spatially sublimate the artistic connotation of northern Shaanxi folk songs.

In order to enhance the cultural brand of folk songs in northern Shaanxi, the museum relies on the operation of modern cultural industries, and the scope of construction includes the sales area of cultural and creative products, the coffee and leisure area of the book bar, the catering center, the training center of northern Shaanxi folk songs, the experience center of northern Shaanxi folk songs, the exchange center of northern Shaanxi folk songs, and the recording and production center of northern Shaanxi folk songs. In addition, the decoration of the 500-person theater of the Youth Extracurricular Activity Center takes into account the function of the large stage of folk songs in northern Shaanxi, which can meet the needs of various performances.

"The folk song public welfare teaching class in northern Shaanxi starts every Saturday at 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., and there are currently about 200 people, most of whom are residents of surrounding communities, as well as folk song lovers from other counties and districts." Zhou Lin, a teacher who carried out public welfare teaching of folk songs at the Folk Song Museum in northern Shaanxi, introduced it.

The combination of cultural and creative industries and the development of catering and retail industries has attracted tourists from all over the world to attract the city's cultural business card of northern Shaanxi folk songs. Since its opening, the Northern Shaanxi Folk Song Museum has received a total of 3,105 visiting teams from home and abroad, with a total of 360,000 visitors (times), which has built an important platform for popularizing the basic knowledge of northern Shaanxi folk songs, displaying the development achievements of northern Shaanxi folk songs, and prospering the cultural and creative undertakings of northern Shaanxi folk songs.

On January 25, on the occasion of the small Chinese New Year's Eve, at the moment of family reunion, a "cloud" Spring Festival Gala let the citizens of Yulin greet the New Year in the folk songs.

At 8 o'clock in the evening, the Spring Festival Gala of "Song from Northern Shaanxi" and the "Cloud" of Northern Shaanxi Folk Song kicked off in the performance of the Northern Shaanxi Folk Song, and more than a dozen programs were brilliantly staged, and the four major live broadcast platforms of Kuaishou, Douyin, Video Number, and Yulin VTV were broadcast live simultaneously, and more than 200,000 viewers watched the performance online, allowing people to fully appreciate the charm of northern Shaanxi folk songs.

This year's Spring Festival, Yulin City has a total of "Big Red Yulin Big Red Year" 2022 Yulin City Spring Festival Gala and "My Hometown and Me" 2022 Yulin City Network Spring Festival Gala two evenings. The program team enabled a 360-degree stage, breaking the boundaries of the stage, creating multiple scenes and spatial transition changes, giving the audience an immersive experience of changing scenery and immersion. In terms of content, the whole evening party took "the public taste to tell the wonderful Yulin story, the people's perspective to take stock of happiness, social conditions and people's livelihood" as the general tone, and launched 15 programs such as folk songs, dances and operas.

In order to further inherit and carry forward the folk song culture of northern Shaanxi, Yulin City has successfully held the Northern Shaanxi Folk Song Art Festival, the Northern Shaanxi Folk Song Contest, the Zhenbeitai Thousand People Old Waist Drum Activity and the series of activities of "Yulin New Year in Northern Shaanxi"; it has collected and sorted out more than 3,000 folk songs of various types in northern Shaanxi, edited and published the "Northern Shaanxi Folk Songs Encyclopedia", and produced "Forever Letter to Heaven - Impressions of Yulin".

With the development of the times, folk songs in northern Shaanxi have gradually evolved into popular music, which is the innovative development of art varieties. Northern Shaanxi folk songs entered the campus, "Northern Shaanxi Folk Songs Museum Cup" music competition... A series of innovative exhibition and performance forms have made the folk songs of northern Shaanxi a living art, an art that is still thriving and developing.
