Compared with the libraries in Datong City and the libraries across the country, it is actually a big brother. Datong City Library was born in 1959, when the site was located outside the West Gate of Datong City, and shared a building with Datong Xinhua Bookstore and Datong Department Store No. 2 Store. Later, due to the continuous increase of books, the load on the floor was sharply overloaded, and a large area of cracks appeared on the ground, and the building became a dangerous building, and the library had to find a new location. In December 1979, the Municipal Library moved to the East Hall on the first floor of the former Datong City Exhibition Hall, and after a brief tidying up, reopened in early 1980, when the collection increased to 100,000 volumes. Although the surrounding environment is poor, the City Library has spent 16 years here. Datong has more than one library. As I said, the Children's Library, which was officially opened in 1982, was the only independent children's library in Shanxi Province at that time, with a collection of about 100,000 books (including periodicals). Originally located on the second floor of the Exhibition Hall outside the West Gate, it was also moved to the third and fourth floors of the west side of the former Workers' Leisure Hotel at No. 3 Yingbin West Road in 1989 due to the problem of ground load-bearing. Datong once had a workers' library. The Workers' Library was established in 1982, and compared with the previous two libraries, it has its own address, which is at No. 3 Yingbin West Road. Many of the retired old workers still have the impression that they once donated two or three yuan to support the workers' library to buy books and run it, the workers' library in the southwest corner of the children's park, the bright yellow façade, the height of the floor and the opening room are very wide, the library collection reached 50,000 volumes, and the workers' library also built a tape hall in the nineties, which was a leading service at that time. This library, which was very popular with workers, students, and citizens at that time, later shrank to the point that only a few offices remained, the main building was first rented out, I also helped in a computer company upstairs at that time, and later, it became a dance hall, here became a hot pot restaurant, here became a bathing hotel, here became a private hospital...
In the new "city map", I have read books and listened to lectures, and I have hosted several sharing sessions with well-known photographers and young musicians, and I have gradually become accustomed to the current appearance of the new "city map". Enjoy the present, but we should not forget the past, the history of the library for more than sixty years is not very long in the vicissitudes of the sea, but in this short period of time, our way of doing it has changed several times. When chatting with several former librarians of the library, they all mentioned such a sentence: "Whether a city's cultural heritage is deep or not, just look at the construction of the city's three libraries." The "three museums" refer to libraries, museums, and exhibition halls. The role of the public library should not be underestimated, it is an institution that disseminates knowledge to the public, an important tool for enriching the spiritual life of the masses, and an infrastructure for the lifelong learning of all people. In the era of the Internet and the knowledge economy, the library is not only the information center, but also the knowledge center, the treasure house and the source of knowledge.
