The book was imported from the original French edition, printed in four colors and beautifully bound. The combination of intuitive images and literary descriptions makes it easier for readers to obtain more in-depth information. Images and words complement each other, the expression techniques are more intense and intuitive, and the emotional appeal is more powerful. And highly loyal to the character theme and the background of the times, the degree of restoration is extremely high, and the information density is extremely high.

Drawn / [Argentina] Gervasio, Ann, Lee

Translator / Zhao Sa

Howard P. P. Lovecraft is a well-known American writer of fantasy, horror and science fiction stories. His inspiration and creations have always revolved around the fear of the universe, the inability of human beings to understand life and the lack of knowledge of the universe. But he was unsuccessful in his lifetime, but he later became one of the most famous horror novelists and influenced a number of writers. The father of the Cthulhu myth, a character who cannot be avoided in contemporary thriller literary and artistic works, and a popular character symbol among literary and artistic youth.

Vividly illustrating his fear of madness and his obsession with writing in the form of a comic book, the book explores the tortuous life of a writer who is passionate about writing, abandoning the world, and eventually escaping from the world, showing some of the most well-known fragments of his work, such as Cthulhu and the Seal of Jugsothos.

How did the father of the Cthulhu myth coexist with depravity and color, and the puzzles and fears that haunted his mind become a common nightmare for modern people? This book uses comic book images to witness the strange world in the eyes of a writer who has a deep fear of life and the universe.

Lovecraft and his snail shell

I don't know how much Alex Nikolaevich spent on this comic book about Lovecraft, but I'm sure it will keep him at peace for a long time. For this, I feel both sympathy and happiness. Sympathy because I guess he suffered a lot to create this book, and happiness because of the sweat and sweat of translating this great writer, the most deeply hidden of the famous writers. Thanks to them, we should raise a glass to Lovecraft, while also smiling at our pain and inadequacy.

Alex is a great translator and author, and his 2016 book Myths and Superheroes is truly amazing, and the book is included in the "Mirror Bookshelf" series of books that are no longer published by the publisher but are absolutely high quality. To devote one task to which any good artist should be committed is the impossible. It is often said that the impossible should not be forced, and perhaps it is. But is that a reason not to try? Yes, I can't pick the stars, but don't I reach out to the stars or long for them? Didn't Lovecraft also try in his novels to depict the endless suffering of human beings who are torn between them, without any hope but death and madness? He has lived hard and lived happily ever after. He is in contact with people and avoids contact, in the world and detached from the outside, under an unbearable double pressure. He had been switching between stepping out of his snail shell and hiding in it. For this is the way the world is: either in us or outside of us. Lovecraft was committed to the world, and the world was committed to him.

Alex Nikolaevich understood and sought to interpret this state of mind, and he set his sights on 1925-1937, during which time Lovecraft strived to become the writer we know today. With alex Nikolaevich's writing and Gervasio's brushstrokes, Lovecraft transcends the boundaries of time and space, and with his financial problems, phobias, and his love of glaciers, cats, and youth, he re-emerges before our eyes. However, I also have to say that in addition to the efforts of Alex and Gervasio, Lovecraft himself has contributed, and the reader can feel this in the dialogue and images of this work (not only because Alex reads a lot of Lovecraft's letters and works, and then makes us feel it through his own language). However, no one can perfectly present the wonderful and complex life of Lovecraft. I wish I had pointed this out for the last time — nor could Josi and Alex Nikolaevich. We can only say that a certain part of the person is conveyed. I use the word "character" deliberately, because readers will find in the book that Lovecraft often takes pleasure in confronting others as a story character, playing the role of grandfather or hermit—Alex shows us this perfectly; Lovecraft has a certain sense of humor when he keeps in touch with his contemporaries. Some would say he was a sad optimist. Or a desperate optimist: he casts his overly sharp gaze on the world in search of infinity, whether his message to himself can be understood or misunderstood. He knew it. It is therefore not difficult to understand why Lovecraft strives to hide himself, to hide behind his characters, which can be extremely racist (I have to admit this, unless I pretend not to know how serious his racist ideas are and claim that he is a miserable person after all), and hide behind his language, characters, and theories that are strange, if not obscure. Yet some of us have tried to pull Lovecraft out of his snail shell where he is hiding, and others have directed our gaze to space and elsewhere in order to know a little bit about this man and his thoughts.

Perhaps, after constant searching, we return to Earth and feel that we have not brought back any elements that fit him perfectly (like we think we came out unscathed at the end of some nightmare or horror movie), but in fact we still bring back a small part of Lovecraft—himself. It's nostalgia, an obsession with the old days, a femininity, a purity that may never really exist. But it is not so much the result of our search for Him as it is because he sees our coming and attaches himself to us, like the old rulers who have come from other planets for the purpose of invading the earth. He grabbed the hand we reached out to. Like all those who have come into close contact with what we call the "master" (the word he laughs at the sight of, and I'm sure we ourselves sometimes laugh at times), Alex has brought back a small part of Lovecraft from his literary journey. His fear of madness, his obsession with writing. His only way out was writing. Write to escape the depravity and chaos that grip him from all sides, and to hide in the written word. He inhabited somewhere in the literary world, hiding between the lines, so deep that only those who knew the inside story, his friends outside of time and space, could find him.

However, pulling the snail out of its shell and making it public, and necessarily taking on something other than the snail, requires what I call "Lovecraft", measure and delicacy, to successfully present the man in hiding and the man without concealment at the same time. Alex Nikolaevich, Gervasio, Ann and Lee are dedicated to such a delicate job. However, if your readers, like me, have tasted a hint of bitter tenderness, then don't doubt that they have accomplished the impossible task.
