Recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation (hereinafter referred to as the "State Administration for Market Regulation") held a special press conference. According to the meeting, by the end of 2021, China has implemented a total of 2423 recalls of automotive products, involving 91.3 million defective products. In the past five years, auto safety recalls have occurred on average once every 1.6 days, and auto companies have taken the initiative to find problems, and active recalls have become the norm.

The number of recalls increased

It is understood that in 2021, a total of 232 car recalls were implemented in China, involving 8.73 million vehicles, and the number of recalls increased by 29% year-on-year. In this regard, Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the Association, said: "The recall of automobile products is a process of eliminating defects in their products by manufacturers of defective automobile products in accordance with statutory requirements and procedures. With the improvement of the consciousness of domestic car companies and the improvement of the complexity of automotive products, recalls have become increasingly frequent in recent years, which is also a mature mechanism for solving the defects of automotive products, and has made great contributions to ensuring the safety of the public and the healthy development of the automotive industry in various countries. ”

Wang Yunsong, deputy director of the Quality Development Bureau of the State Administration for Market Regulation, said: "From the perspective of the structure of the recalled components, the recall due to defects in engines and electronic and electrical components in 2021 accounted for 84% of the total number. From the perspective of defect recall reasons, those recalled due to manufacturing reasons accounted for 15% of the total recalled quantity; those recalled due to design reasons accounted for 85% of the total recalled quantity. ”

New security features

It is worth noting that in the field of new energy vehicles, there have been 229 recalls so far, involving 1.98 million vehicles.

At present, China's new energy automobile industry has entered the fast lane of development, the level of industrial technology has been significantly improved, the industrial system has become increasingly perfect, and the competitiveness of enterprises has been greatly enhanced, which has become the main direction of the transformation and development of the automobile industry and an important engine for promoting sustained economic growth.

By the end of 2021, the number of new energy vehicles in the country will reach 7.84 million, accounting for 2.6% of the total number of vehicles. The manufacturing and design defects of vehicle power batteries and battery management systems, mechanical damage, high temperatures, external short circuits and other reasons may cause safety hazards. Wang Yunsong said that the State Administration for Market Regulation will continue to pay attention to the safety of new energy vehicles, increase technical research and defect investigation, and prevent and resolve major safety risks.

"Compared with traditional fuel vehicles, new energy vehicles present new safety characteristics, and some vehicles on the market have new types of risks such as battery chemical stability, regenerative braking, and collision compatibility, which need to be studied in depth and supervision strengthened." Wang Yunsong also said that the State Administration for Market Regulation has established a new energy vehicle accident reporting system, formed a new energy vehicle accident investigation and coordination network, and produced and revised relevant standards and specifications such as "Electric Vehicle Safety Requirements" and "Electric Vehicle Power Battery Safety Requirements", thereby strengthening the research on the common safety issues of new energy vehicles.

It is worth mentioning that with the continuous improvement of the safety supervision and security system of new energy vehicles, the level of vehicle safety operation has been steadily improved, and the fire accident rate of new energy vehicles has continued to show a downward trend.
