Toyota announced its latest production cut plans on Jan. 24, just days after the company announced that production at its Japanese plant would be affected by the pandemic and global microchip shortages. On the bright side, the January production cut will save some parts, which can keep the production line running in February, thus offsetting the previously predicted production cuts in February.

Toyota's shutdown will affect 19 production lines at 11 Plants in Japan, where it has 14 plants with a total of 28 production lines. Affected models include Toyota Yaris, Corolla, Prius, Camry, CH-R and Land Cruiser, as well as Lexus-branded LC, LS, IS, RC, NX and LX. It's unclear how much the latest outbreak has affected other automakers' factories in Japan.

Toyota said the shutdown, combined with previously announced plans to cut production, would result in a 65,000-unit reduction in january production, of which 45,000 were due to the pandemic and another 20,000 were related to ongoing chip shortages. Shiori Hashimoto, a spokeswoman for the company, said the shutdown would make it harder for them to meet their previously set January production target of 800,000 units.

Just last week, Toyota warned that it would not be able to meet its global production targets for the current fiscal year due to the double whammy of parts shortages and the pandemic. Toyota said it expects its global production to fall below its target of 9 million units in the fiscal year ended March 31, which is the second time toyota has lowered its production target for this fiscal year. Toyota's global production target began with a global production target of 9.3 million units, but last summer, the global economic slowdown had an impact on Toyota, forcing the company to reduce production like other competitors.
