He studied science in his early years and worked in computer design after graduation, and in an interview he described how he embarked on the path of film:

"I got a job designing computers in Seattle and started working eight to five. By the time I was thirty, I already felt like I couldn't get old enough. One day, I passed a movie theater with "Achille, The Wrath of God" written outside, and I went in and came out with a different person. Basically, it wasn't the style or beauty of the images that infected me, but Mr. Herzog's never-before-seen spirit of making films. I understood that before I could really get old, I had to do something I liked. ”

Without hesitation, he gave up his job as a superior computer engineer and returned to Taiwan to start his own film career. A famous Taiwanese film circle is that when he returned to Taiwan to make a movie in the early 1980s, Yang Dechang's T-shirt was printed with "Herzog Bresson Yang", that is, the English names of Herzog, Bresson, and Yang Dechang, which means that he will become a director as great as the first two master directors, dressed in X with humor and confidence.
