Twitter's drastic reorganization of the security team The fired executives were once famous hackers

author:Finance

Twitter reshuffled the top of its security team this week, telling employees wednesday that the new CEO was restructuring the social media service and that the head of security and the chief information security officer were fired separately.

Twitter confirmed that Peiter Zatko, the head of the company's security division, has left the company and that his more famous name in the security space is "Mudge." CISO Rinki Sethi will leave in the coming weeks.

Some outlets obtained a memo sent to employees by Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal on Wednesday that said the changes were made after an "assessment of the way the organization is led and its impact on the most important work." Agrawal said "the nature of the situation" limits what he can share with employees.

Sisi and Zatko did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Agrawal, who was named Twitter's chief executive last November, has restructured the company's executives since he succeeded founder Jack Dorsey. Last December, Agrawal restructured its leadership team, firing chief design officer Dantley Davis and head of engineering Michael Montano.

Zatko and Sisi joined Twitter in late 2020. Zatko is a well-known hacker who has worked for a long time in government and private enterprises. Prior to joining Twitter, he worked at DARPA, Google, and Stripe. He began his cybersecurity career in the 1990s when he was a member of the hacking group Cult of the Dead Cow. In July 2020, a teenage teenager hacked into Twitter's system and took over the accounts of high-profile users before he was recruited into Twitter.

Sisi also joined Twitter after the hack, and together with Zatko, she was assigned to improve the company's security and protect user data. She previously served as vice president of information security at IBM and worked on security at Intuit and Walmart.

According to current and former Twitter employees, Lea Kissner, the company's head of privacy engineering, will serve as interim chief information security officer. She has held leadership positions in security and privacy at Google and Apple.
