25 years ago today: Van Gundy called Jordan a "hypocritical liar" and the latter then slashed 51 points

Twenty-five years ago today (January 22, 1997), the New York Knicks challenged the Chicago Bulls on the road, and then Nisk coach Jeff Van Gundy publicly denounced Jordan as a hypocritical liar before the game, saying that he would "make friends" with enemy players before the game to let them down their guard and kill them in the game later.

"Watching him wander back and forth on the field, and from time to time go up to other players and smile at them, pat them on the butts, and then fuck them on the court, one of them scoring 45 points, and hugging each other after the game to prove their friendly relationship, I don't understand this kind of operation." Van Gundy said.

After Van Gundy's remarks, in the following game, Jordan killed all four sides, shooting 18 of 30, 5 of 8 three-pointers, 10 of 11 free throws, slashing 51 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals, helping the Bulls win 88-87 against the Knicks.

After the game, then-Bulls coach Phil Jackson said of Van Gundy's remarks: "Attacking Michael [Jordan] [in this way] was a strategic mistake. ”
