The Comprehensive Extreme Conditions Experimental Device (SECUF) is one of the key construction contents of the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" determined by the medium- and long-term planning of the construction of major scientific and technological infrastructure in the mainland. The legal entity of the project construction is the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the joint construction unit is Jilin University. The comprehensive extreme conditions experimental device (Beijing part) started construction in Beijing Huairou Comprehensive National Science Center in September 2017, and the first batch of five experimental stations that passed the performance process test in 2021 will be officially opened to domestic and foreign users for appointment on January 20, 2022.

What are the integrated extreme conditions experimental device?

The comprehensive extreme conditions experimental device is divided into four scientific experimental systems according to the research direction, namely the physical property characterization system, the quantum state regulation system, the ultrafast condition material research system built in Beijing, and the high temperature and high pressure large-volume material research system built in Jilin Province. These experimental systems are interrelated, supported and integrated, providing functional and internationally advanced experimental conditions for in-depth material scientific research under extreme conditions.

How extreme is the integrated extreme conditions experimental device?

The single extreme condition index of the device is to achieve an extreme low temperature of 1mK, an ultra-high voltage of 300GPa, a strong magnetic field of 26T (fully superconducting composite magnet) and an ultrafast light field of 100as; the comprehensive extreme condition index is 10000T/K B/T value (magnetic field/temperature), 2800T· GPa/K B· P/T value (magnetic field, pressure/temperature) and 60000GPa· K's P· T value (pressure and temperature), and provide a variety of experimental methods such as material preparation, physical property characterization, quantum state regulation, and ultrafast dynamics research under extreme conditions.

As an international advanced user experimental device integrating ultra-high pressure, extreme low temperature, strong magnetic field, ultrafast light field and other extreme conditions, the comprehensive extreme conditions experimental device will be used to expand the research space of material science, promote the discovery of new physical states, new phenomena and new laws, help domestic and foreign research in many frontier fields related to material science, and strive to achieve world-class research results in the discovery of new high-temperature superconductors, breakthroughs in unconventional superconducting mechanisms, breakthroughs in quantum regulation core technologies, and ultrafast regulation of physical properties.

What are the first experimental stations to open?

1. Extremely low temperature solid-state quantum computing (strong magnetic field) experimental station

The experimental station is based on the microwave and low frequency measurement lines built on the dilution refrigerator, with electrical measurement and control instruments at room temperature, to achieve the measurement and control of quantum states at extremely low temperatures, which is used for solid-state quantum computing experimental research in many mainstream directions in the world. The experimental station contains two sets of liquid helium dilution chillers, with superconducting magnets of 12T and 9-1-1T, respectively.

2. Extremely low temperature solid state quantum computing (extremely weak field) experimental station

The experimental station provides characterization and testing services for superconducting quantum chips, and also loads self-developed multi-superconducting qubit chips to provide remote access services through the cloud platform. At present, it has two independently operating quantum chip test platforms, including dilution chillers, arbitrary wave generators, microwave signal generators, signal acquisition systems, vector network analyzers, etc.

3. Cryogenic in situ scanning tunnel - angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy measurement experimental station

The experimental station includes ultra-high vacuum pipe interconnection of extremely low temperature strong magnetic field scanning tunneling microscope (STM), high resolution angle resolution photoelectron spectrometer (ARPES), oxide molecular beam epitaxial system (OMBE) and pulsed laser deposition growth system (PLD), which can grow high-quality thin film samples in situ, and characterize the sample lattice structure, local electronic state, and band structure in situ, and is the international leading STM-ARPES-OMBE-PLD four-in-one vacuum interconnection system.

4. Micro-nano processing platform

The platform mainly meets the preparation needs of micro-nano structures and devices required by users and various systems for testing, including 100-level clean area and 1000-level clean area. Among them, the 100-level clean area is the yellow light area, which is divided into four functional areas, which can be used for different ways of exposure, development and gluing and other processes; the 1000-level clean area is divided into eight functional areas, which can carry out the exposure, etching, deposition and other processes of various materials and their micro-nano structure characterization and physical property testing.

5. Process support platform

The platform provides technical support services based on machining and electronic testing. In terms of machining, including CNC machining centers, turning centers, row tool lathes, wire cutting, EDM, laser cutting and other more than 30 sets of machining equipment, can provide mechanical design, processing, welding, vacuum detection and low temperature detection and other services. In terms of electronic testing, including 33GHz oscilloscopes, 50GHz spectrum meters, 50GHz vector network analyzers and other high-frequency test equipment, as well as 2182A, 6221 and other digital source tables, there is a C-level standard electromagnetic shielding room, which can test weak signals and test sensitive electronic components, and can also provide testing of electronic components in the low temperature environment of liquid helium temperature zone.

How do I make an appointment?

In fiscal 2022, the comprehensive extreme conditions experimental device will open two rounds of applications for ordinary subjects, and the validity period of the machine time will be one year. The first round of applications for general topics will be officially launched on January 20, 2022, and domestic and foreign users are welcome to apply for use.
