On July 19, 1985, the Vietnamese army launched a combat operation code-named M2 to attack our Position 577, which was the most advanced position in the Nala area of the Lao Shan Front, of which Post 6 was the most prominent post of Position 577, so Post 6 became the primary target of the Vietnamese army.
The sentry is a unique defensive fortification during the two-mountain round war, due to the characteristics of the local lava landform, so that our army can not build trenches, communication trenches and other defensive positions on the high ground, can only rely on the original natural caves on the high ground, stone cracks to strengthen the formation of tunnels, and arrange fire points, each post can only accommodate 2 to 5 soldiers, each post is connected into a line, the line is alternately covered for defense.
At that time, the guards in charge of the Defense of Post No. 6 were five soldiers from 4 platoons of 2 companies, 6 companies, 595 regiments of the 199th Division of the 67th Army, namely Cheng Yushan, soldier Zhang Zequn, Wu Dongmei, Miao Tinglong, and Wei Changjin.
At 5:00 a.m. on the 19th, the Vietnamese army concentrated on the shelling of the No. 6 post, Cheng Yushan ordered Miao Tinglong to observe the Vietnamese movements at the post, and the rest of the personnel entered the tunnel to avoid the artillery, at this time the 5 soldiers did not know that the Vietnamese troops in front of them were as many as two battalions and a reinforced company, with about 1,000 people.
Soon after, Vietnamese artillery fire began to extend deep into Position 577, intending to prevent our reinforcements from reinforcing Post 6, and then Vietnamese infantry began to pour into Post 6.
Cheng Yushan immediately ordered all the fighters to enter their respective combat positions and called for fire support from the artillery through the foot-talking machine. The warrior Wei Changjin was wounded just out of the tunnel, and the stray bullet hit his collarbone and left arm, but he only went through a simple bandage before continuing into the battle.
After 10 minutes of fierce fighting, the 4th squad repelled the enemy's first attack. But before the 4th squad of fighters could catch their breath, the Vietnamese shells rained down again.
Because at this time, the 4th squad of fighters had not yet had time to return to the tunnel, a shell exploded not far from Miao Tinglong, Miao Tinglong was hit by multiple shrapnel, his eyes were blind, and he fell directly on the position; the soldier Wei Changjin's right chest and left eye were hit by shrapnel, and the eyeballs of his left eye fell out, but when he saw his comrade Miao Tinglong injured and fell to the ground, he forced his pain to plug his eyeball back into the orbit, and used all his strength to carry Miao Tinglong back to the tunnel, and he himself fainted because of excessive blood loss.
The comrades immediately helped Wei Chang stop the bleeding, and after a while the enemy shelling stopped and the infantry began to attack again...
I don't know how long later, the enemy's shells woke Wei Changjin up, and when he was ready to stand up and continue to fight, he saw his comrade-in-arms Wu Dongmei, who was exchanging fire with the enemy at the mouth of the cave, die under the enemy's artillery fire, and at this time Wei Changjin also found that the squad leader Cheng Yushan was gone, the comrade-in-arms Zhang Zequn had also died, Miao Tinglong was still breathing but fell into a deep coma, and he was the only one left on the No. 6 post.
In fact, at that time, the squad leader Yu Chengshan asked Wu Dongmei to guard the tunnel entrance to protect his comrades inside, while he fought alone outside until all the bullets and grenades were gone. Because the enemy's fire was too fierce at that time, Yuchengshan was suppressed and could not return to the tunnel, because of the lack of ammunition and many wounds on his body, he could only climb back to the rear platoon command post to report the battle situation and ask for support, and then the seriously injured Yuchengshan was sent to the hospital for treatment, the doctor took out more than 40 shrapnel from him, and after the war he was awarded the "first class merit".
When Wei Changjin woke up, he saw that he was the only one left on the position, so he climbed to the mouth of the cave with a walking machine on his back and continued to command the artillery to shell. Our artillery shells, like long eyes, smashed precisely into the formation of the enemy's charge, and the front of post No. 6 was full of enemy limbs and broken arms, as well as wounded and corpses who could not be carried away, and the Vietnamese attack was once again repulsed.
Taking advantage of the gap between the enemy's attacks, Wei Changjin reported the casualties to the 2 platoon commanders of the rear platoon command post, and also learned about the squad leader. The platoon commander was in a hurry, but now the rest of the post of position 577 was also attacked by the enemy, the strength was contained, and the Vietnamese artillery also blocked the no. 6 post, unable to reinforce.
"The position is handed over to you..." These are the only words that the platoon leader can think of, and it is also difficult to say.
After seeing the sacrifice of his comrades-in-arms, Wei Changjin was ready to die with the enemy, and he assured the platoon commander that he would die and die with the position! At the same time, he made a "request" to the platoon commander and other cadres in the walk-to-talk machine:
"After my sacrifice, I hope the organization will posthumously recognize me as a member of the Communist Party!"
When the enemy began to attack again, Wei Changjin occupied favorable terrain, commanded the artillery through the walking machine while firing, and coordinated the fire support of friendly neighbors to protect his flank safety, so as to concentrate the artillery fire on the Vietnamese infantry attacking in the front, this tactic achieved good results, repelling the Vietnamese charge several times in a row.
However, the Vietnamese also judged from the weakening gunfire at post 6 that there were not many people at the post, so they stepped up their attack again and again.
After all, there was only one combatant left on post 6, but the Vietnamese tactics of the human sea still worked, and after several offensive adjustments, they finally boarded the surface position of post 6, and Wei Changjin had to retreat to the tunnel.
Because of the long time without rest, coupled with the fact that he was also seriously injured, Wei Changjin even had a very difficult time with the gun, rushing out was only in vain, bad luck will be captured; if you continue to stay in the tunnel, you can only be killed by the Grenade of the Vietnamese Army, and you will also die with the seriously injured Miao Tinglong.
What to do in the face of such a desperate situation? Wei Changjin did not hesitate in the slightest, he made the choice of Wang Cheng in the movie "Heroes and Children", Wei Changjin picked up the step talking machine and said to the platoon leader:
"Platoon leader, shoot at me!"
Hearing these words, the platoon commander who had just been calling Wei Changjin was quiet, he didn't know how to answer, nor did he know whether to give the order to fire, after all, there were still two soldiers on the position alive, if he ordered the artillery, it was very likely that his own soldiers would be killed together.
"You wait, I can't..."
Seeing that the shells had not fallen for a long time, Wei Changjin was in a hurry, he even "taught" the platoon leader, of course, he was more anxious that he had heard the voice of the Vietnamese troops outside the cave, which meant that the enemy would soon find the tunnel, and he and Miao Tinglong would either be sacrificed or captured.
After careful consideration, the platoon commander gave the order to fire the artillery, but made a request for the way the shelling was carried out, and he asked the artillery to use the No. 6 post as the center of the circle and let the bullet point explode in a circle. To avoid damaging the tunnels, bomb only the surface fortifications of Post 6 and the enemy's follow-up echelons.
Platoon commanders want to do their best to protect their soldiers, but such close-range artillery support is very dangerous, although there are accurate coordinates, theoretically can not hurt their own people, but the battlefield can not be guaranteed, in case the dense artillery fire to collapse the tunnel, the consequences will be unimaginable.
But this is the only way that can be thought of at present, under the order of the platoon commander, ten thousand cannons are fired in unison, the barrage of shells exploded like ripples on the surface of the water spread from the top of the mountain to the foot of the mountain, the Vietnamese soldiers on the surface position of post No. 6 were caught off guard, and the dyed silent lay on the ground, the explosion cried and cried on the ground, and the ghosts who were not blown up threw their armor and ran wildly down the mountain, afraid that the second round of shelling would take them away.
The 4 squads of 5 fighters held out at post 6 for a total of 11 hours, of which Wei Changjin alone held out for 9 and a half hours, repelling at least 8 company-level attacks by the Vietnamese army. When the reinforcements boarded the No. 6 post, Wei Changjin was almost semi-comatose with 22 wounds, but he still asked to save Miao Tinglong first, and then he agreed to go to the rear hospital.
Wei Changjin knew that his left eye could not be saved, so he asked the doctor to keep his right eye, because he still wanted to go to the front line. Then the doctor urgently operated on Wei Changjin, not only removed the eyeball of his left eye, but also removed more than 20 shrapnel from him, after the operation, Wei Changjin was in a coma for 7 days before he was out of danger of life, and the first thing Wei Changjin did after waking up was to submit an application to join the party.
Wei Changjin still has 5 pieces of shrapnel on his body that cannot be removed, resulting in a "drip" sound every time he passes through the security check, and every time the security personnel ask him to learn his identity, they will also be in awe of him.
Wei Changjin's deeds were quickly reported to the central authorities, especially because he shouted "Shoot at me" and became a well-known celebrity at the time, known as "Wang Cheng alive". After the war, Wei Changjin was awarded the honorary title of "Combat Hero" by the Central Military Commission. Wei Changjin's 6 companies produced a total of 6 first-class heroes in the Battle of Laoshan, 18 of whom died, and after the war, they were awarded the honorary title of "Laoshan Sticking to heroic company".
After stepping off the battlefield, Wei Changjin was sent to the military academy by the army for further study, and has been contributing to the construction of the army since then, working in the main regiment for 7 years, deputy division for 7 years, and then becoming the political commissar of the military region, which can be said to be a down-to-earth work, step by step promotion, and finally promoted to major general in July 2020 and became a general.
Because Wei Changjin only has one eye, many people have advised him: You have so many honors, you don't have to "suffer" in the army, and it is better to find a place to get an idle pension. But Wei Changjin always shook his head, in his heart, the army was already his home.
Another hero in Post 6, Miao Tinglong, was also awarded first-class merit and was also awarded first-class disabled soldier for being blind in battle (there are still 4 pieces of shrapnel left in his left eye that cannot be removed).
After recovering from injury, Miao Tinglong spent two years learning Braille and studying a total of 400,000 words of medical textbooks to master massage techniques. In 1989, Miao Tinglong opened his own Tuina outpatient shop in his hometown and started his own business.
In 1998, Miao Tinglong entered Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine for further study, and published a number of academic papers that were recognized by experts in related fields, and later volunteered to help nearly 10,000 patients and won a number of honorary titles.
The party and the state have not forgotten this meritorious man, and the relevant leaders have visited this hero many times and given him certain help and convenience in life and work, and Miao Tinglong has also publicly thanked the party and the government for their concern on many occasions.
Someone asked Miao Tinglong what was his biggest regret in this life, and he said:
