Ronaldo's angry reaction to being replaced by Manchester United is "normal" – head coach Ralph Lonnick

Cristiano Ronaldo reacted angrily after being replaced by Harry Maguire in the 71st minute.

United interim manager Ralph Lonnick has said Cristiano Ronaldo's reaction to being substituted in the 3-1 win over Brentford was "normal", although the striker was clearly irritated at the end.

Ronaldo was replaced by defender Harry Maguire in the 71st minute and Rangnick switched to a three-back at Brentford Community Stadium on Wednesday to protect United's lead.

Television cameras captured Ronaldo dropping his coat after leaving the pitch and Ronnick's recent conversation with the 36-year-old.

"It's normal – a striker wants to score – but he's recovered from a minor injury and it's important to remember that we have another game coming up," Lonnick told BT Sport after the game.

'Also after what happened at Villa Park, this time we had to defend the lead and it was important that we were back at the back of the five and while we didn't keep the ball out, it was important to make sure nothing else happened.

In his post-match press conference, Lonnick said he explained to Ronaldo why he decided to replace him.

"He asked me why, I said listen, I have to make a decision for the benefit of the team, we were in exactly the same situation at Villa Park, taking a 2-0 lead with 15 minutes left in the game and we didn't want to make the same mistake again," Lonnick said.

"I decided to switch to five and have Marcus on the right and I think it was the right decision.

"He's a goalscorer and he wants to stay and score, but for us, staying tight is more important for us.

"When we scored the third goal, I said to him and I said maybe when you become the manager yourself, you might make the same decision.

"I didn't expect him to hug me after being replaced, I know what the goalscorers think and how they perform, but I have to make a decision for the benefit of the team.

"I don't have any problems with Cristiano, he's recovered from injury and hasn't trained for a week and a half. Why don't I use the players on the bench? ”

The result put United two points behind Fourth Place West Ham United on Saturday's visit to Old Trafford.

Brentford coach Thomas Frank called Lonnick's side "very lucky" as goalkeeper David De Gea was forced to make multiple saves when he was controlled by the home team in the first half.

"We are the smallest club in the Premier League, the biggest in Manchester United," Frank told BT Sport.

"We destroyed them in the first half, they didn't smell, three huge chances, there can only be one winner in this game. They were very lucky.

"One of those nights was a fair game for David De Gea and if we get those opportunities again we will be at the back of the net. The way we beat them in the first half was fantastic and proud of my team. ”
