Brazzaville, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Kinshasa news: Congolese police announced on January 18 that they have arrested a number of suspects who participated in the attack in 2021 and killed Italian Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo Luca Attanasio.

Congo police told the media that the suspect attempted to kidnap Attanasio for ransom.

In February 2021, Attanasio was killed in an attack by unidentified militants in North Kivu, Dr. Congo. The Dr. Congo government said Attanasio was travelling with the U.N. World Food Programme convoy, along with a police officer and a driver.

The security situation in eastern Dr. Congo is grim, with a number of local armed forces and foreign rebels operating there. The Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has imposed martial law in Ituri and North Kivu provinces since 30 April 2021.
