Aerial footage taken by the New Zealand Defence Forces in the aftermath of the disaster showed that houses in many areas of Tonga were severely damaged and entire villages were razed to the ground as a result of the tsunami.

However, the New Zealand Defence Force reported that several small islands, including Lofona, Owa, Mataku, Mongaven and Ujha, had "escaped" the disaster.

Most of the houses on these islands are covered with volcanic ash on the top, but the port, the pier can still be used, and the solar panels in several villages are also well preserved. Photos show that yachts staying on Owa Island and Maungawan Island are also well preserved.

The houses in Uyha are also damaged by nailing their windows to the floor with wooden planks, and the local gas station can also operate normally.

According to the report, after the tsunami, local airports, ports and other emergency measures were taken as quickly as possible, so these areas suffered less damage.

On January 18, local time, the Tonga government spoke for the first time after the disaster, saying that the rescue work is underway, and the Tongan government also said that considering that the reinforcements of foreign rescue teams may spread the new crown virus, Tonga only agreed to accept contactless assistance and receive drinking water, emergency supplies and other aid supplies provided by the New Zealand government.
