These people are our predecessors and role models, and their selfless dedication is worth learning and celebrating.
In October 1952, the United Nations launched the fiercest attack on our volunteers. Highland 597.9, located on the right side of Shangganling, is a key target for unannounced forces. There were three positions in the front of Hill 597.9, namely Position 3, Position 9 and Position 10. At that time, Hu Xiudao and squad leader Li Feng led a new recruit Teng Shisheng to guard position 3.
The firepower of the United Nations army was very strong, and under their indiscriminate bombardment, the fortifications on the battlefield of the Volunteer Army were almost ineffective. After Hu Xiudao and his comrades arrived at Position 3, they found that there was only one large bluestone left on the position that could be used as a cover. So they hid behind, ready to fight the enemy.
Hu Xiudao had only been in the army for more than a year, but he had already participated in several battles and was considered an experienced warrior. However, this was the first time he had experienced such a large-scale battle. At that time, the volunteer army often used the way of veterans with new recruits for training, and the new recruits fought a battle with the veterans, and learned to fight under the demonstration and guidance of the veterans. The recruit Teng Shisheng is an "intern" who wants to learn to fight through this battle.
Before dawn, the United Nations Forces, made up of American and South Korean troops, began to attack The 597.9 Heights under the cover of aircraft cannons. Hu Xiudao and the others hid behind Daqingshi, and after the enemy entered the firing range as a group, the squad leader Li Feng ordered an attack. Hu Xiudao immediately threw the explosive canister at the enemy, and in an instant, he blew up a group of enemies. Immediately after, Hu Xiudao threw a grenade and a grenade. As he prepared to continue throwing the grenade, the squad leader told him to stop the attack, and it turned out that the enemy had retreated after being ambushed.
After a while, the enemy immediately sent two platoons of troops to launch a second attack. This time, the squad leader Li Feng was responsible for fighting the enemy troops in front, Hu Xiudao was responsible for hitting the soldiers in the rear of the enemy, and Teng Shisheng was responsible for supplying them with ammunition as an auxiliary. In this way, with their cooperation, they repelled several enemy attacks. At this time, the nearby No. 9 position was very dangerous, and the squad leader Li Feng was transferred to the No. 9 position to support.
Hu Xiudao hid behind The Great Bluestone with Teng Shisheng and dodged countless enemy fire. Suddenly, Hu Xiudao found that all his comrades in position 10 had been killed, and the enemy army was charging upwards. Therefore, Hu Xiudao picked up a blaster, broke through the enemy's defense line, and rushed to position 10. He asked Teng Shisheng to report to the company commander on the situation of position 10, and he defended position 10 on his own. He threw grenades and explosive canisters one by one at the enemy, temporarily suppressing the enemy's attack. Soon after, after receiving the news, the comrades quickly rushed to support position 10, and Hu Xiudao returned to position 3 and continued to hide behind the big blue stone to meet the enemy's attack.
The battle was fought from morning to night. The enemy sent a large number of troops to attack positions 3, 9 and 10. But Hu Xiudao hid behind the big blue stone and never let the enemy attack position 3. Before each enemy attack, he would place a large number of grenades, grenades, and magazines at his side to deal with the attacking enemy. He first threw grenades, and then used machine guns to strafe at the enemy, repelling the enemy's charge again and again.
Relying on the cover of Da Qingshi, Hu Xiudao successfully held his position, and this battle made Hu Xiudao famous in the first battle. He repelled a total of 41 enemy attacks in one day, annihilated more than 280 enemy troops, created a record for the number of enemies annihilated by a single person in the volunteer army, and became a well-deserved king of individual combat.
The so-called "heaven and place are favorable", in his later years, Hu Xiudao, when recalling his combat experience, repeatedly talked about the big bluestone on the position. He said that thanks to this large bluestone, if there was no such big bluestone as a cover, it would be difficult to hold the position.
On January 15, 1953, Hu Xiudao was credited with the honorary title of "First Class Combat Hero of the Chinese Volunteer Army". On June 25, Hu Xiudao was awarded the title of "Hero of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea". In March 2002, Hu Xiudao died of illness in Nanjing at the age of 71.
