In June 1951, the 20-year-old Hu Xiudao joined the Volunteer Army and became a soldier of the 5th Company of the 91st Regiment of the 31st Division of the 12th Army of the Volunteer Army, and it was not until November 5, 1952 that he really went to the battlefield and killed the enemy for the first time with real guns.
Some people say that he was able to become the "God of War" of the volunteer army, which is a good opportunity, is this really the case? At that time, Hu Xiudao was holding out on the 597.9 high ground in Shangganling, and the volunteer army combined with the hills near the highlands to construct 12 positions, of which Hu Xiudao was position No. 3.
In the trenches were him and another recruit, Teng Tusheng, as well as squad leader Li Feng, who had previously attacked the Shangganling Heights by the U.S. 7th Division, and due to the heavy casualties of the American troops, the U.S. Army withdrew from the battlefield and handed over to the ROK 2nd Division to attack, rhee ordered that shangganling be taken on November 5.
So under The order of Syngman Rhee, the strength of the attack on the 597.9 heights increased from a battalion before to a regiment, and the firepower also increased, and in the face of such pressure, Hu Xiudao was a little scared at first, after all, it was the first real gun and live ammunition, and in the face of the enemy's first wave of charge, he did not dare to look down.
Only to know that the squad leader let him still hand grenade, he threw the grenade and the explosive canister in his hand to the outside of the trench one by one, and suddenly the squad leader Li Feng grabbed his hand and said: "Stop, the enemy has retreated!" Only then did Hu Xiudao dare to stick his head out and look outside.
Only to see the enemy downhill fell a piece, recalling that just throwing grenades, Hu Xiudao suddenly felt that there was nothing terrible about fighting, when the enemy launched a second charge, Hu Xiudao and the new soldier Teng Tusheng were already able to cooperate in the fight, Hu Xiudao was responsible for fighting, and Teng Tusheng was responsible for delivering ammunition.
After the two blockade battles were fought, the two recruits had become veterans, and the squad leader Li Feng also taught them how to use grenades to blow up more enemies, that is, to hit both sides of the enemy first, and then hit the enemy's front row after the enemy gathered.
Then throw grenades at the gathered enemies, such a grenade can blow up more enemies, but also left ammunition, at that time in order to make the new recruits adapt to the battlefield faster, the volunteer army adopted the method of "one look, two hits and three belts", that is, the veterans beat the recruits to see, and then the recruits fight, the veterans guide, and then the veterans fight with the new recruits.
In this way, the squad leader Li Feng taught Hu Xiudao and Teng Tusheng two recruits, and then the squad leader was transferred to support position 9, and there were two of them left on position 3, and they held out until the afternoon, when they found that there was no movement on position 10 and the enemy was rushing toward position 10.
So Hu Xiudao and Teng Tusheng quickly moved to position No. 10, and when they reached the position, Hu Xiudao threw grenades and explosive canisters vigorously, and finally beat the enemy down, at this time Teng Tusheng was injured and sent down to the position, at this time, position 3 and position 10 were only hu Xiudao alone.
In this way, he defended back and forth on the two positions alone until dusk, and the enemy finally gradually did not move, Hu Xiudao insisted until the company commander brought people up, and the company commander said: "The observation post saw your battle, and you repelled the enemy's attack 41 times a day."
Hu Xiudao was sent down to his position, slept for three consecutive days and three nights, and after the war, he killed a total of more than 280 enemies, and the headquarters of the Volunteer Army recorded Hu Xiudao's special merits and awarded him the title of "hero of the first class", he was praised as the "God of War", and various honors followed.
Hu Xiudao remained in the army until 1988, when he retired from his position as deputy chief of staff of the 12th Army and died on March 13, 2002, at the age of 71.
