A.A. Novikov of the Soviet Union was a senior air force officer loyal to the Soviet regime. He was promoted to the rank of Commander of the Air Force (a rank unique to the Soviet Union, one level higher than field marshal), and he was also very capable. In the Great Patriotic War, he made countless meritorious achievements, and it can be said that he made great contributions to Stalin and the Soviet army. In the Battle of Stalingrad, he commanded the Air Force in counterattacks and received the Suvorov Medal of the First Class for outstanding command. This was followed by 7 more medals. In 1944, the U.S. government honored the anti-fascist fighter by awarding him the Medal of Merit.

Novikov also participated in the Battle of Kursk and the organization and command of the liberation of the North Caucasus, Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic Coast, Poland, and the capture of Berlin, as well as the elimination of the Japanese Kwantung Army. Stalin spoke highly of him and awarded him the rank of Field Marshal of the Air Force, followed by the rank of Commander of the Air Force. At the end of the Great Patriotic War, Novikov was twice awarded the Gold Medal for Hero of the Soviet Union, and the only commander of the service who received this honor twice during the war was Novikov.

Framed

However, even such a veteran with a high reputation cannot avoid offending people. In March 1946, Novikov was abruptly relieved of his position as commander of the Air Force on the pretext that he had procured a batch of substandard Jacques 9 fighters. The plane caused many pilots to die while training. On April 22, 1946, the Central Committee of the Soviet Union held a secret meeting, and they set up an "Air Force Case Investigation Committee" whose members included Zhukov (who was forced to participate and test loyalty) and a series of senior military leaders. The meeting decided to arrest Novikov and a group of relevant personnel.

(The Yak 9 fighter, due to the harsh war conditions at the time, many fighters were poorly manufactured.) It just so happened that this matter was caught, but the actual situation was: Novikov strictly prohibited changing the structure of the aircraft at will, and the accident was caused by those lay political workers)

Late at night at the end of the meeting, the Air Force Case Investigation Committee set a trap. They used Stalin's summons as an excuse to trick him out of Novikov's apartment. He was subsequently sent to Lubyanka prison. Still in the dark, Novikov believed in the trap of summoning him, and deliberately pinned two Soviet Hero Medals to the chest of his military uniform to show his respect for Stalin. But when he got to prison, his uniform and medals were immediately confiscated. The Lubyanka Prison is a well-known "resort" where many famous people are imprisoned, and ordinary civilians may not be able to enter this high-level place. The atmosphere was oppressive, with many generals and high-ranking personnel being arrested and even showing signs of absurdity. When a person's colleagues and friends are arrested, he even expects to be arrested sooner rather than later. Because I don't know when I will encounter this situation, at least I can see my acquaintances in prison. It was in prison that Novikov met a bunch of his old friends: the labor hero Shahulin, the chief engineer of the Air Force Repin, the member of the Air Force Military Commission Simonov, the Air Force General Order Minister Khiretsnev, the CPSU cadres Butnikov and Grigolian. They all had a uniform charge: arrest for the crime of opposing the state. The investigation and interrogation was carried out by General B.C Abakumov, Director General of the State Counterintelligence Service.

In this prison, many strong-willed veterans and soldiers are held. Some of them learned the Gestapo methods of the German devils in the war, and many survived. But here, even the real Iron Man will be out of his soul. Those interrogators used corporal punishment and intimidation to demand that those arrested confess to their crimes. Novikov knew very well that Stalin needed the confessions of these people to denigrate Zhukov's exploits in the Great Patriotic War. In order to achieve the purpose of persecution, General Abbagumov personally provided Novikov with a false confession, which read: Comrade Stalin, I am responsible for the crimes committed during my tenure as commander of the Air Force. I am also responsible for the procurement of Jacques 9 non-conformities. As commander of the Air Force, I should report truthfully and should not conceal it. Instead of thanking you for your teachings and help during the Great Patriotic War, I am deeply dissatisfied. At the same time, I also want to confess that I had a close relationship with Zhukov in the later period and slandered you politically. In May 1946, the Supreme Court of the USSR sentenced Novikov to five years in prison.

Subsequently, on the basis of this fabricated "incriminating evidence," Stalin instructed the Supreme Military Council to discuss the dismissal of Zhukov from all his posts. Despite the opposition of the delegates, Zhukov was eventually relieved of all his duties because of Stalin's intervention. In May of the same year, Stalin declared that Marshal Zhukov was arrogant and could not correctly face his exploits. In the conversation with his subordinates, he tried to attribute several major battles and some unrelated battles in the Great Patriotic War to himself.

Settle the grievances

In 1953, Stalin died. The Soviet government reopened Novikov's case. Beria, director of the Soviet State Counterintelligence Agency, revealed that the alleged air force incident was fabricated by General Abakumov and his peers. In 1953 the Central Committee of the USSR decided to restore the honour of comrades in all air force cases of that year. In June of the same year, Novikov was re-released from prison and returned to service in the army.

By this time Khrushchev had come to power, and Novikov had explained to him the importance of long-range aviation during his brief re-service career. But Khrushchev was obsessed with missiles and instead wanted to cut long-range aviation. Nevertheless, Novikov contributed to the development of long-range strategic bombers and aviation construction for the Soviet Air Force. Due to war and trauma in prison, Novikov was called a report in 1956 and retired. But he did not leave the sky and transferred to the civil aviation school to cultivate talents. Due to the denigration and misunderstanding in prison, although Zhukov also invited Novikov's entire family to his home to party in the later period, after all, the damage had been caused, and the relationship between the two gradually became estranged.

Novikov received another Red Flag Medal in 1961 and died in 1976. His position in the Soviet Union was very high, and he was still often commemorated by the Russian army after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The top brass of the Russian Air Force pointed out that Novikov's position is very important and irreplaceable, and his spirit will inspire the air force to continue to struggle.
