Knowing that Chen Yun had presided over the compilation of the book "The Decisive Battle of Liaoshen" and that he had always been very concerned about the education of revolutionary traditions, he hoped that he could help promote the writing of the history of the Four Fields and the completion of the Pingjin Battle Memorial Hall.

Generally speaking, the workload of compiling the history of the war is relatively large, and it is a little difficult to rely on Chen Yun alone to preside, and after some thought, he decided to let Hong Xuezhi take charge of leading the compilation of Siye. After the end of the War of Resistance Against Japan, the northeast became an extremely important place, one is that the northeast has very rich resources, developed industry, and convenient transportation; second, the northeast is bordered by the Soviet Union in the north, Outer Mongolia in the west, and Korea in the southeast, and its strategic position is extremely important.
In the face of Chiang Kai-shek, who was looking at the tiger and trying to develop a civil war, Chairman Mao said: "If the northeast can be under our leadership... On a national scale, the victory of the Chinese revolution has a foundation, a solid foundation. Therefore, if our Party wants to win victory after chiang kai-shek's civil war, it must gain control of the northeast.
To this end, Chairman Mao and other central leaders made preparations as quickly as possible, set up a northeast bureau, and dispatched troops from various liberated areas to the northeast to carry out work. Therefore, it was normal that the third division where Huang Kecheng and Hong Xuezhi were located was ordered to march into the northeast.
When Huang Kecheng told Hong Xuezhi of this order from the central government, he immediately began to make preparations for entering the northeast. First of all, it is necessary to replenish the equipment needed by the troops, including weapons, cotton coats, etc.; second, to mobilize the troops ideologically. After all, going to the northeast is a big deal. Finally, do a good job of personnel replenishment.

After these preparations were made, on September 28, Huang Kecheng and Hong Xuezhi led the Third Division (later renamed the Sixth Column) into the northeast. At this time, after receiving the order from the central authorities, Chen Yun went to the northeast to arrange work. As a result, Chen Yun, who was originally the political commissar of the Central Committee, proceeded from the overall strategic situation and under the arrangement of the organization, became the secretary of the North Manchuria Branch Under the leadership of the Northeast Bureau.
On the northeast battlefield, Hong Xuezhi commanded and participated in the famous battles of Tieling, Changtu, and the defense of Siping. After the siping defense war was completed, Hong Xuezhi was appointed commander of the Heilongjiang Military Region, and his first task was to suppress bandits and consolidate the northern Manchuria base area, and later he served as the commander of the sixth column. In this way, Hong Xuezhi and Chen Yun formed a profound revolutionary friendship on the battlefield in the northeast.
After the liberation of the whole country, because Chen Yun was mainly responsible for economic work and Hong Xuezhi was mainly responsible for military work, the exchange between the two was not much at this time. It was not until after the outbreak of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea that the two gradually deepened their ties.
In 1951, the Korean War was extremely fierce, and the enemy constantly bombed our logistics line, which brought great difficulties to the transportation work of our army. Entrusted by General Manager Peng, Hong Xuezhi returned to China to report the situation to the central authorities. Chen Yun was very concerned about the situation of the volunteer army on the Korean battlefield, so he specially invited Hong Xuezhi to his home to inquire about the situation.

The second reason was that Hong Xuezhi led his troops to participate in the Battle of Pingjin, and later went south as an advance force for Shino, and was appointed deputy commander of the 15th Corps of Shino. As for the matter of Shino, Hong Xuezhi obviously knew more. It was based on the above two reasons that Chen Yun thought of Hong Xuezhi at the first time and called Hong Xuezhi to let him come to Shanghai for discussions.
Soon after, Hong Xuezhi flew to Shanghai and rushed to Chen Yun's home. When the two met, they were very excited, and their hands were tightly clasped. After the two sides said hello, they sat down. While showing Hong Xuezhi the letter written by Lin's daughter, Chen Yun said: "The history of the four field battles should be written, and the history of the other field armies has been written, like the history of the second field army. ”
Chen Yun's words, Hong Xuezhi deeply agreed, he nodded his head in affirmation. Seeing the situation, Chen Yun said, "There are two main things that I called you this time. First, I want to talk to you about the writing of the history of the four fields. I thought about it for a long time, but I still think you are more suitable for leadership writing. ”
When Hong Xuezhi heard this, he felt that he could not take on this heavy responsibility, but Chen Yun thought that Hong Xuezhi was very suitable and asked him not to resign. At Chen Yun's insistence, Hong Xuezhi finally took over this task, but he also made a request to Chen Yun, hoping that Chen Yun could be the general counsel and do specific things by himself.
Chen Yun agreed, and demanded that when Hong Xuezhi presided over the compilation of the history of the four field battles, he should implement the principle of seeking truth from facts and seize the time to complete this matter. Then, Chen Yun said the second thing: "The construction of the Memorial Hall of the Battle of Calm must not be left behind, and the location can be selected in Tianjin." First, there are relatively few Tianjin memorial halls, and second, in the Pingjin Campaign, our army used strong troops to liberate Tianjin, which is of commemorative significance. ”
Before he left, he said to Chen Yun, "I will sort out your opinions and show them to a few bosses." Chen Yun agreed. After that, Hong Xuezhi wrote a report and reported it to the Central Committee. The Central Committee agreed with Chen Yun's opinion and decided to compile a history of the Four Fields and build a memorial hall for the Battle of Calm in Tianjin.
Soon after, the Central Committee held a meeting to discuss the arrangements for the compilation of the history of the four fields. The meeting agreed to let Chen Yun serve as the general adviser, led by Hong Xuezhi, responsible for related matters, and then all the old comrades of Siye participated in the compilation work.
In June 1995, the Central Committee decided to set up a leading group for compiling the "War History of the Fourth Field Army," and Chen Yun and Hong Xuezhi, as well as members of the Academy of Military Sciences and old comrades of Siye, jointly undertook the task of compiling the history of the Four Fields.

Despite this, Chen Yun has always been concerned about the compilation of the war history and the construction of the memorial hall. On April 10, 1995, Chen Yun died of illness in Beijing. Hong Xuezhi was very sad to hear this, and he turned his grief into strength and actively led the comrades in the writing group to carry out the compilation work.
In order to do a good job, Hong Xuezhi held many meetings, mobilized the strength of many aspects, and after many hardships, finally in 1998, he successfully compiled the "History of the Fourth Field Army" and published the book in October.
As for the establishment of the Pingjin Battle Memorial Hall, Hong Xuezhi has not forgotten that it was completed in Tianjin as early as 1997.
