Red Star Interview | Deng Le: The dynamic sculpture "Rhythm of Life" makes the flag-raising ceremony of the Winter Olympic Village never end

At the entrance of the sunken square of Beijing Winter Olympic Village, the dynamic sculpture "All the Way to the Landscape and the Rhythm of Life" is particularly eye-catching. During the upcoming Winter Olympics, athletes from all over the world will see such a scene: the flags of various countries and regions raised in the square are reflected in the curved mirror of this group of sculptures, and as the installation slowly rotates, it continues to rise in the mirror, as if holding a flag-raising ceremony that never ends.

The author of this group of dynamic sculptures, Deng Le, president of the Sichuan Sculpture Society, has a long history of connection with the Olympic Games - as early as 1990, the sculpture "Rising Horizon" created by him participated in the "Second China Sports Art Exhibition" and won a silver medal, which was collected by the Chinese Olympic Committee.

Deng Le told Red Star News that this Winter Olympics is facing the world to collect sculpture proposals for relevant themes, "As far as I know, there are about 1,000 proposals participating in the application, and the judges have preliminarily selected more than 100 proposals, and finally selected 20 works to be nominated for awards." ”

From these 20 nominated works, the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee selected 10 more works as the best works and landed them in the corresponding venues. The final form of "All the Way to the Landscape and the Rhythm of Life" is 19 mirror cylinders arranged in the form of a matrix of 5.5 meters high, which is very futuristic.

According to Deng Le, this group of "all the way scenery" dynamic sculptures is a series that he has made for many years, and has also been presented at other exhibition sites before. "In different scenes, for different cultural spaces, to reflect the unique cultural landscape and natural landscape of this space." Deng Le said, "For example, this work is placed in the Flag Raising Square of the Winter Olympic Village, reflecting the rising dynamics of the flags, and it is also a sublimation of the Olympic spirit." ”

For this creation, Deng Le made a meticulous investigation of the spatial environment of the Flag Raising Square in the Winter Olympic Village, "This work gives the audience a feeling, mainly relying on the picture generated by its rotation and refraction, so the requirements for the environment are particularly high." For example, in which direction the sun rises, how much angle it shines on the sculpture, and where the flagpole is located, all need to be taken into account. He set the bending angle of each mirror to 25°, so that the flag reflected on the mirror surface was just able to produce a rising visual effect as the device rotated.

The mirror cylinder rotates slowly at a speed of one revolution per minute. As a result, the static three-dimensional sculpture has added a new dimension due to its movement in time, becoming a "four-dimensional" dynamic sculpture. In order to achieve the best visual effect, Deng Le also uses computer software to simulate. "This is a work that blends, resonates and resonates with the environment, which expresses the love of sports in all countries and regions in the world, and also conveys the immortality of the Olympic spirit."
