The ridiculed navigator: Jacques Katia

author:Gao Laiyi

background

Jacques Cartier (1491–1557) was a French explorer and navigator who made three voyages, financed by the King of France, to snatch gold and silver treasures, all of which ended in failure, and Katia returned home in disgrace, spending the rest of her life in depression.

Between 1535 and 1536, Jacques Cartier took 103 sailors on a second voyage, landed in Canada, and discovered a cure for scurvy. The first voyage was due to the short time at sea and did not encounter scurvy.

In the winter of 1535, the weather was so cold and the ice was too thick for Katia's ships to sail and were forced to spend the winter in Stadarkona, a village in Quebec. Throughout the winter, the area was hit by scurvy, which affected 100 of the 103 sailors in Katia.

Suffering from scurvy is very miserable, Katia described the symptoms of scurvy this way: some people have lost their strength and cannot stand, some people have found purple scars on their skin, and then purple scars have begun to appear on their ankles, knees, thighs, shoulders, etc., their mouths are smelly, their gums are gradually rotting, the flesh on their bodies begins to fall out, and even the roots of their teeth are almost completely lost.

The local chieftain, Donacona, ordered people to peel off a few pieces of bark from the coniferous tree known locally as Annedda, pluck some leaves (rich in vitamin C), and then boil it into tea for Katia to drink.

Katia refused to drink it, fearing that he would be poisoned, after all he knew that he was the aggressor, but some desperate sailors drank it anyway, and the sailors thought, it was better to die of poison quickly anyway.

Surprisingly, the sailors soon felt better, continued to boil tea, and within 8 days a tree was stripped away and the sailors' scurvy was cured.

issue

Jacques Katia should have been the first European explorer to discover a cure for scurvy, and he should not have hidden this discovery, but over the next two hundred years, hundreds of thousands of seafarers and civilians still died of scurvy.

In fact, jacques Katia was also very happy after discovering the treatment of scurvy, and after returning to France, he told some doctors about the symptoms and treatment of this scurvy, but the doctors laughed at him, saying that the bark and leaves boiling water can also cure the disease, you are really funny, Katia is very depressed.

This inadvertent ridicule, however, caused serious consequences, countless people lost their lives, weakened the combat effectiveness of the French Navy, led to france's repeated defeats in the war, affected france to burn and loot around the world, and gave up the opportunity to Britain.

Scurvy was very popular at the time, spreading throughout Europe, and people tried to find ways to treat it, but ridiculed the treatment that Katia had discovered.

According to statistics, during the Seven Years' War between England and France (1756-1763), the casualties caused by scurvy far exceeded the casualties of battle.

It is said that in 1770, France and Spain formed a combined fleet to attack Britain, because the Spanish fleet was more than a month late, and two-thirds of the French navy's crew lost their combat effectiveness due to scurvy, of course, this battle could not be fought.

revelation

If the French doctors had not ridiculed Katia, taken Katia's opinion seriously, and studied the treatment of scurvy, there would not have been so many people dying, the war would not have been so snug, and the history of Western aggression might even be rewritten.

This treatment for scurvy from Aboriginal Canada falls under the category of nutritional therapy. In fact, many diseases today can be cured with nutritional therapy, but many people do not know.

This case also shows that if you talk to a doctor of Western medicine about nutritional therapy, the risk is very large, you may be ridiculed, or even lose your health and lose your life.

Regarding scurvy, Gao Laiyi also compiled an article called "The Neglected Doctor: James Linde". Gao Laiyi repeatedly said that this matter is well-intentioned, but the current medical situation is unclear, the article is restricted from being published, can only say more implicitly, I hope that people with a heart can find the mystery and related information, and can save lives when it is critical.

Gao Laiyi stood on the shoulders of giants to spread nutritional therapy, hoping that no one would laugh at it, because by the time they could not laugh, it might be too late.
