In his decades of military career, General Liu Zhen has made outstanding military achievements and created many wonderful examples of famous military history.
In the famous Battle of Tianjin, Liu Zhen once did not play his cards according to the rules, and issued a strange order: he even let a regimental commander skip the rank to command a deputy division commander to fight.
In January 1949, the Northeast Field Army launched the famous Tianjin Campaign. This battle was an important part of the Pingjin Campaign and one of the most important battles in the Liberation War.
At 10:00 a.m. on January 14, all units of our army launched a general offensive at the same time. After just over an hour, the infantry columns burst into the city and engaged in fierce street battles with the defenders inside the city.
Late that night, the 345th Regiment of the 115th Division of the 39th Army of the People's Liberation Army, under the leadership of regiment commander Yan Wenbin, charged and fought hard, and after taking three enemy strongholds in Tianjin in one fell swoop, it surrounded the Shoufeng Flour Company, where the enemy was heavily garrisoned.
Stationed at the Flour Company was Liang Tiebao, commander of the Rear Admiral Of the Provisional Fifty-ninth Division of the new Third Army, who, with the headquarters of his Fifty-ninth Division and the strength of two regiments, retreated to a five-story building and erected a crane machine gun to resist.
Due to the enemy's desperate resistance and fierce firepower, the battle of the Three-Four-Five Regiments was fought very badly, and two consecutive attacks were unsuccessful.
Commander Yan Wenbin, considering that after successive fierce battles in the whole regiment, the battle was reduced more, and continuing to fight would only bring greater casualties to his troops and at the same time promote the arrogance of the enemy, so he had to call the division headquarters and ask the division commander to send troops to reinforce.
Unexpectedly, Yan Wenbin called the phone into the division headquarters, but the person who answered the phone was Liu Zhen, commander of the Thirty-ninth Army. After he learned that it was Yan Wenbin who was calling, he asked him, "How are you fighting over there?" Tell me what the situation is. ”
When Yan Wenbin explained that the flour company was more difficult and asked the division commander to send reinforcements, Liu Zhen immediately issued an order to Yan Wenbin: "Well, you and your troops will surround the enemy first, you don't have to rush to launch an attack, first stabilize the situation, and I will immediately send a regiment to reinforce you." ”
Not long after, the reinforcements sent by Liu Zhen did indeed reach the vicinity of the Flour Company. When Yan Wenbin saw that it was actually a deputy division commander of the 152nd Division, he thought that the commander of the army really gave face this time.
However, when he saw Liu Zhen's handwritten letter, he couldn't help but be shocked, the letter read: "Comrade Wen Bin, I sent the deputy commander of the 152nd Division to bring a regiment to reinforce your regiment, and the next battle will be commanded by you!" ”
Yan Wenbin felt that this order made him very embarrassed: This one who came was the deputy division commander, and I was only a regimental commander, how could I command him beyond the level?
Yan Wenbin had no choice but to call Liu Zhen again: "Commander, I have never heard of the regimental commander commanding the deputy division commander at a higher level, but you still ask the deputy division commander to command our regiment in a unified manner, and I promise to obey the orders of the deputy division commander." ”
Liu Zhen smiled and said in an unmistakable tone, "I don't want to say this, since I let you direct, you command, don't have any worries!" ”

"Nothing is impossible. First, you are an old regimental commander with excellent command experience, which I know very well; second, you have already destroyed three enemy strongholds in Tianjin, and you are already relatively familiar with the situation in all aspects. The deputy division commander listened to what Yan Wenbin said to Liu Zhen and knew that he could have ideological baggage, so he took the initiative to say to him: "Commander Yan, I know that you may feel a little awkward, but in fact, there is no need to worry about it at all. You are all soldiers, not to mention that Commander Liu has already made his words very clear, I completely obey this order, you can just let it go! ”
Speaking of the commander's words, Yan Wenbin knew that it would be inappropriate to say anything more, so he and the deputy division commander made corresponding arrangements for the next battle:
Yan Wenbin led the 345th Regiment to gather all the explosive packs and explosive canisters of the whole regiment, and the task was to destroy the Flour Company building;
The deputy division commander led the regiment he had brought back to the southeast to launch a flanking attack to block the enemy who had escaped from the Flour Company.
At 1 o'clock in the morning of the 15th, the 345th Regiment successfully carried out the blast under the personal supervision of Yan Wenbin, blowing up a quarter of the five-story building of the Flour Company, and the enemy was so frightened that he had no intention of resisting anymore, and surrendered or fled.
The 345th Regiment had already encircled the company on three sides, but deliberately left an opening to come out, and if the enemy wanted to escape, he could only flee to the southeast. These fleeing enemies obediently entered the "pockets" set up by the regiment led by the deputy division commander and captured nearly 4,000 fleeing enemies, including the enemy division commander Liang Tiebao.
The 345th Regiment also captured more than 3,000 enemies on this side, and more than 7,000 enemy prisoners on both sides.
It has to be admitted that Liu Zhen's unusual dispatch of troops this time will play a non-negligible role in the victory of this battle. In fact, in General Liu Zhen's military career, there have been many times when this kind of brilliant example of using talents in an eclectic manner and making decisions in a conventional manner has been staged.
It is worth mentioning that it was not long before Yan Wenbin was promoted to chief of staff of the 115th Division, and was awarded the rank of major general in 1964.
