In the sixth year (111 BC) of the Western Han Wu Emperor Yuanding, Zhuya Commandery (in modern Qiongshan) and Dan'er Commandery (儋爾郡) (in modern Danzhou) were established on Hainan Island, which were under the jurisdiction of Jiaozhou Thorn History. This was also the beginning of the direct rule of the central government over Hainan Island.
After Qin Shi Huang unified the Six Kingdoms, he sent troops south to unify the Lingnan region, setting up Guilin County, Nanhai County and Xiang County in the south, hainan or Xiang County, but at that time Hainan was outside the Xiang County, that is to say, the Qin Dynasty did not fully control it.
With the decline of the Qin Dynasty, Zhao Tuo divided the Lingnan region and established the State of Nanyue. This Zhao Tuo was sent by Qin Shi Huang to lead an army to pacify Lingnan with Tu Sui, and Zhao Tuo stayed in Lingnan after that to prevent the Yue people from rebelling.
However, he took advantage of the chaos at the end of Qin. The territory of the State of Nanyue was equivalent to that of the three counties of Qin. However, after Liu Bang established the Han Dynasty, he did not recognize the State of Nanyue established by Zhao Tuo, and privately gave the three counties of Nanhai, Guilin, and Xiang County, which Zhao Tuo held, to Wu Rui, the king of Changsha.
In the eleventh year of Han Gaozu,Liu Bang sent his master Lu Jia to South Vietnam to persuade Zhao Tuo to accept the Han Dynasty's title of king and naturalize the central government. After Lu Jia arrived in South Vietnam, he really persuaded Zhao Tuo to accept the Seal of the King of South Vietnam given by Han Gaozu.
However, after Liu Bang's death, during the reign of Emperor Hui of Han, when Empress Lü was in power, Zhao Tuo's mind rose again, announcing that he had broken away from the Han Dynasty and established himself as emperor, which was another period of instability.
After Emperor Wen of Han ascended the throne, Liu Heng again sent Lu Jia as an envoy to South Vietnam, and Zhao Tuo was once again persuaded to remove the imperial title and return to the Han Dynasty. South Vietnam has experienced a total of five generations of South Vietnamese kings, which have existed for nearly a hundred years.
After Zhao Tuo's death, his grandson Zhao Hu succeeded to the throne. At that time, Min Yue had sent troops to attack South Vietnam, and Zhaohu had also asked Emperor Wu of Han for help, so he was more grateful to the Han Dynasty, but he did not dare to go to see Emperor Wu of Han, for fear of not coming back.
In fact, in addition to Zhao Hu, his son Zhao Bao did not dare to come during his reign in South Vietnam. The Han Dynasty several times asked them to follow the example of the princes in the interior and enter The Capital to worship the Son of Heaven, but they were all rejected.
It just so happened that during Zhao Xing's reign, civil unrest broke out in South Vietnam. Lü Jia, the minister of state, had assisted three kings, had great influence and many cronies, Zhao Xing was young, he could not control the prime minister at all, the South Vietnamese regime was unstable, and civil unrest broke out.
Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty sent the fubo general Lu Bode and the louchuan general Yang Shu to lead divisions to quell the Rebellion in South Vietnam, ending the family-style rule of the local government of the South Vietnamese state. Subsequently, Emperor Wu of han divided his territories of Lingnan, Jiaotong and Hainan into nine counties, and Hainan Island had zhuya and Dan'er counties.
