Give up high salaries to concentrate on the paper-cutting process
Rao Baolian has been engaged in paper-cutting for 27 years, and her relationship with paper-cutting began in Foshan.
At the age of 19, Rao Baolian came to Foshan to work as a teacher at an art school. "At that time, my salary was 2,000-3,000, and more than ten years ago, this salary was equivalent to nearly 10,000 yuan now, and if I insisted on it for half a year, I might be able to buy a second-hand house."
By chance, Rao Baolian won an award for a paper-cut work she taught herself. This competition made Rao Baolian realize her love and talent in the art of paper cutting. She gave up her high-paying job at school and came to the Foshan Folk Craft Society, starting from a probationary student with a salary of only 800 yuan and concentrating on the paper-cutting process.
Here, Rao Baolian met Chen Yongcai, the representative inheritor of the national intangible cultural heritage paper-cutting project. In her opinion, Chen Yongcai is not only a skilled master, but also a teacher who cares for his younger generations. In 2009, Rao Baolian officially worshiped Chen Yongcai as a teacher, determined to carry forward the paper-cutting skills of Foshan.
Resurrect the copper chisel paper cut that has been lost for more than 30 years
Copper chisel paper-cutting is a precious type of Paper-cutting in Foshan, which is made of bronze copper foil, which is as thin as a cicada wing, and its palatial style makes it unique among many paper-cutting categories. Unfortunately, since the 1970s, this paper-cutting art has disappeared for many years.
In order to "resurrect" the copper chisel paper-cutting, rao Baolian repeatedly groped and studied with a few pieces of copper chisel-cut paper that master had preserved and was only the size of a palm. After some difficult experiments, she successfully created a new work that brought the art of copper chisel paper cutting back to the world.
Since then, with the craftsman spirit of "doing one thing in one lifetime", Rao Baolian has continued to boldly innovate and plate the surface of copper foil with real gold to create a brilliant effect. She also absorbed the thangka painting process, added rich and colorful colors to the copper chisel paper cutting, and chiseled the front and back of the copper foil respectively, making the copper chisel paper cutting become three-dimensional and vivid.
Collect the inheritance and spread the traditional Chinese culture
She received apprentices every three years, and many of her apprentices were foreign friends. Among them, 1 person won the title of municipal inheritor, 1 person was ready to apply for the title of master craftsman, the paper-cutting works of Russian apprentices were very popular overseas, and the Thai apprentices worked as paper-cutting teachers in Thailand...
Rao Baolian said that she always advises her apprentices that the first lesson of teaching paper-cutting skills must tell students the origin and characteristics of paper-cutting art, plant the roots of traditional culture in students' hearts, and pass on paper-cutting skills from generation to generation.
In recent years, traditional art has spawned many cultural and creative products, and Rao Baolian's paper-cut works have also participated in it, which have been made into light signs, clothes, headdresses, etc. "Paper-cutting is not limited to paper products and can be presented in different forms." She revealed that in the future, she plans to make paper-cutting into fixed-dimensional stud earrings, so that more young people can understand and fall in love with paper-cutting.
It is understood that on the basis of extensive recommendations from various units in various places, in accordance with the standard requirements of "dedication, excellence, meticulousness, and the pursuit of excellence in craftsmanship", the Provincial Federation of Trade Unions, the Propaganda Department of the Provincial Party Committee, and the Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology have adhered to the front-line workers, the construction of a new development pattern, and the characteristic industries of Guangdong.
Up to now, the "Nanyue Craftsmen" learning and publicity activities have been carried out for six years, and 100 craftsmen with social influence in all walks of life have emerged. All localities and units have taken the opportunity of studying and publicizing activities and taking the "Nanyue Craftsmen" study and propaganda candidates as an example, cultivating more high-quality technical and skilled personnel, skilled craftsmen, and Southern Guangdong craftsmen, and contributing to promoting Guangdong to walk in the forefront of the country and create new glory in the new journey of comprehensively building a modern socialist country.
