From the air, Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory looks like an aircraft carrier. Located in the Lingang New Area, the world's leading new energy vehicle manufacturing base covers an area of 860,000 square meters, which is China's first wholly foreign-owned vehicle manufacturing project and Tesla's first overseas factory.
From start-up, production to delivery, Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory took less than a year. The amazing "Tesla speed" made Musk dance, and thus created a golden sign of Shanghai's business environment, which was promoted to the whole country as a reform experience.
Where is the Gigafactory "Super"?
Where is Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory Super? First of all, it is the concept of super environmental protection. At the beginning of the design, the Shanghai Gigafactory formulated the optimal process control of the factory area. Tesla lets trucks carrying production materials unload directly at the intersection of the required parts of the production line to reduce emissions from transportation, which is called "a warehouse on wheels."
Secondly, different from the "total punching and welding" process of traditional vehicle manufacturing, Tesla has also added a die-casting workshop, equipped with the world's largest 6,000-ton pressure casting machine, which can realize the model Y rear plate integration structure in 180 seconds of rapid die-casting molding, reducing more than 70 parts to 1 part.
Tesla has also independently developed a production and manufacturing control system, which is deeply used in vehicle manufacturing, battery workshop, etc., with human-computer interaction, intelligent identification and traceability functions. At the same time, all corners of the automated production line are covered with highly reliable industrial networks.
Why is it named "GIGA"?
Many people don't know that Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory also has an English name - GIGA. The word "Giga" is derived from a unit of measurement and means "billions". Tesla's Shanghai Giga factory, named Giga, represents Tesla's determination to change the way billions of people travel.
The year that just passed was a special year for Tesla. According to the earnings report, Tesla delivered more than 930,000 vehicles worldwide in 2021. Among them, the Shanghai plant delivered more than 450,000 vehicles, playing a pivotal role.
Looking forward to 2022, Liu Yang, head of product communication at Tesla China, said that Tesla will continue to promote more technological innovation and production process optimization, boost the construction of Pudong Leading District and Lingang New Area, further promote the clean energy transformation, and help China achieve the "double carbon" goal as soon as possible.
