The U.S. government has doubled down on orders for Pfizer's oral COVID-19 drug

On January 4, local time, the Biden administration said it would double its orders for Pfizer's new crown oral drugs, with a total of 20 million oral courses of oral drugs. The White House expects about 4 million courses of drugs to be delivered by the end of January; deliveries of 10 million courses by the end of June.

This is the largest order for Pfizer's COVID-19 oral drug to date. While doubling down on drug purchases, Biden once again called on the American people to actively vaccinate against the new crown.

The COVID-19 oral drug, called Paxlovid, should be taken as soon as symptoms appear, a 5-day course of treatment, and can be taken at home by the patient. The drug was approved in the United States last December and is suitable for people 12 years of age and older. It reduces the likelihood of severe illness, hospitalization, or death in high-risk patients by nearly 90 percent.

Merck's covid-19 oral drug, molnupiravir, also received U.S. regulatory approval last month. The U.S. government has reached an agreement with Merck to buy 5 million sessions of molnupiravir for $700 per session.
