After the Battle of Wuhan, in order to eliminate the threat of Chinese troops in northern Hubei and southern Henan to Wuhan and the traffic of the Pinghan Line (now the Beijing-Han Railway), they began to attack the Zaoyang area of Suixian County, Hubei Province. But in fact, as early as April of the same year, the Japanese army dispatched troops, equipped with a large number of artillery, tanks and aircraft. It was intended to penetrate deep into the 5th Theater of Operations, in an attempt to strike at the main force of the Chinese army. After making all the preparations, the Japanese launched a full-scale offensive against the Fifth Theater of Operations on May 1.
In order to contain and block the Japanese army's attack, the left and right armies of Li Zongren, commander of the Fifth Theater of Our Army, and the Jiang Defensive Army defended and counterattacked the Japanese army. Li Zongren had already guessed the attempt of the Japanese army, so he later ordered the counter-attack of the Japanese army to be changed into a defense. According to the enemy's offensive posture, we should do a good job in careful campaign organization and make specific arrangements for the defensive tasks and combat plans of each unit.
From May 1 to 23, the troops of the Fifth Theater of Operations successively recaptured Zaoyang and Suixian. After successive defeats, the Japanese army fled from Zhongxiang, Yingshan and other places, returning to the pre-war situation, and later declared that the Battle of Suizhao ended with the victory of the Chinese army. In this battle, our army participated in more than 220,000 battles and suffered more than 20,000 casualties. The enemy army participated in the battle with more than 113,000 casualties.
Our army won the Battle of Suizao, and when the Japanese army retreated, our army pursued and blocked it effectively, and achieved greater results. The Japanese also failed to achieve their predetermined strategic objectives.
